Yvonne A. Hill, 86 of Winchester, VA, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at The Village at Orchard Ridge.
Yvonne was born August 31, 1938, in Harrisburg, PA, the daughter of the late Robert and Agnes Trout. She was a graduate of Richmond Union High School in Richmond, CA where she sang soprano in the school’s prestigious A Capella Choir. She earned a bachelor’s in social work from the University of California at Berkley, the first in her family to earn a college degree. As a social worker, she helped women and girls in prison for several years before moving to Jerusalem, her husband, Hugh Kenneth Hill’s first U.S. Foreign Service post. Yvonne supported her husband’s 30-year diplomatic career, which took them and their three children to then-West Germany, then-Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Zambia, and Austria. She loved to play tennis and was quite good. She loved to shop for unique rugs and art from different countries and interior decorating. Yvonne loved dogs and worked with an organization in Florida which raised puppies to become seeing-eye dogs. She was passionate about gun control, civil rights, and the rights of Palestinians. In the early 1990s, Yvonne’s husband became the U.S. Ambassador to Bulgaria. While there, she befriended numerous artists and purchased their art.
Yvonne is survived by her husband, Hugh Kenneth Hill whom she married on February 4, 1962, daughter, Jennifer R. Hill (Matthew Murphy) of Oneonta, NY, sons, Derek L. Hill of Asheville, NC and Brian K. Hill of Hanover, PA; grandchildren, Alexandra Murphy of Oneonta, NY, Brianna Hill of Buckhannon, WV and Sophia and Kenneth Hill both of Washington D.C.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Yvonne on Friday, December 13, at 1pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
