Winfred L. Sammons
Winfred “Tink” Lawrence Sammons, 82, of Kearneysville, West Virginia, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014, in Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Virginia.
Mr. Sammons was born in 1931, in Louisa, Kentucky, the son of the late William L. and Rae Sammons. He was a graduate of Louisa High School in Louisa, Kentucky. Mr. Sammons was a Veteran having served in the United States Army during the Korean War. In addition, he played baseball for the US Army. Mr. Sammons was a Facilities Engineer for the United States Government at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. retiring in 1986. Mr. Sammons loved the Lord and was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Shenandoah Junction, West Virginia, as well as Woodmen of the World. He was a guitar picker, dubious singer who knew the first verse of every song ever written, and was known to his family as “Tink”, friends as “Tex” and “Sam” at work.
He married Betty Jane Boyd on November 22, 1953 in Washington, D.C. She preceded him in death on December 9, 2007.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Jane Sammons-Reilly and husband, Timothy, of Bluemont, Virginia; Sharon Sammons of Kearneysville, West Virginia; sons, Timothy Sammons of Kearneysville, Jamie Sammons and wife, Candace, of Charles Town, West Virginia; three grandchildren, Hannah Reilly, Emily Sammons, Jed Sammons; and sister, Mary Alice Sammons Collins and husband, Harry of Bonifay, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Elinor Jane Ridenour; three brothers, Charles, Carl and James Sammons.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
