William “Bill” Matthew Kerns, 89, of Winchester, Virginia passed away Sunday, September 23, 2018, at his home.
Mr. Kerns was born in Frederick County, Virginia, the son of the late John and Virginia Kerns. He was a veteran having served with the National Guard. Mr. Kerns retired as maintenance supervisor with the City of Winchester Public Works, after 39 years of service. He enjoyed hiking, photography, and bowling. He also collected antique blow torches. Mr. Kerns was a member of Bethany Hill Baptist Church.
His wife, Madalene Kerns, whom he married on November 5, 1949 in Winchester, Virginia, preceded him in death in 2003.
Surviving are daughters, Karen Snapp of Winchester, Virginia and Sharon Daniels (George) of Gainesboro, Virginia; grandchildren, Laura Massie (Jason) of Capon Bridge, West Virginia and Sherry Kerns of Augusta, West Virginia; five great grandchildren; a great great grandson; sister, Lucille Baker (John); brothers, Nathan Kerns (Faye), Russell Kerns, Doug Kerns (Nida), Bobby Kerns, and Donald Kerns (Carolyn); and brother-in-law, Junior Ricketts.
Along with his parents and wife, Mr. Kerns was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Ann Ricketts; brother, Clifton Kerns and his wife, Tobe; sisters-in-law, Sharon Kerns and Nadine Kerns.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 6 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 am on Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Pastor Carol Martin officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Winchester, Virginia.
Serving as pallbearers will be George Daniels, Jason Massie, Ethan Daniels, Garland Poland, Gary Lofton, and Scott Seal.
