William Henry “Bill” Orndorff of Salem, Virginia passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 28, after a wonderful morning of doing what he loved, cycling and spending time with his family and friends. An avid cyclist, Bill enjoyed many opportunities to travel and cycle at home and abroad.
Bill had a long and successful career in the printing industry, having worked for Shenandoah Publishing House and Judd’s, Incorporated, before retiring from R.R. Donnelley and Sons as the Vice President of Strategic Sourcing. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Panama Canal Zone as part of the first ever deployed Hawk Missile Unit. Having been an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, he was honored to be a member of the Order of the Arrow.
Bill believed in supporting the communities where he lived and worked. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Salem, and a past member of the Roanoke Valley, Strasburg, and Front Royal Rotary Clubs. He was a very strong supporter of and volunteer with the United Methodist Community Outreach Program.
Bill is survived by his wife Earline Byrd Orndorff of Salem, VA, two sons William David (Zenah) Orndorff of Blacksburg, VA and Russell Clark Orndorff of Stephens City, VA, two granddaughters Travertine and Naomi Orndorff of Blacksburg, VA, one sister Joanna Smith of Reliance, VA, several nieces and nephews, and a his best friend and “brother” Paul Ehlers (Sally) of Stephens City, VA as well as all his cycling buddies, “The Cheetahs.” He was born in Winchester, VA on August 6, 1941 and was raised in Stephens City, VA, which he always called “home”. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry Orndorff, Sr. and Louise Robertson Orndorff, two brothers James Russell Orndorff and Robert Randoff Orndorff, and his grandparents Russell and Minnie Robertson and John Norton and Leona Orndorff.
A memorial service to remember Bill and celebrate his life will be officiated by the Reverend Paul Henrickson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Stephens City, VA at 2 PM, Thursday, August 2, 2012, followed by a time together for family and friends. The cremation and memorial arrangements will be handled by Omps Funeral Home in Winchester, VA. A private committal will be held at a later date.
