William “Bill” E. Harbaugh, 78, of Frederick County, Virginia died Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Harbaugh was born in 1938 in Winchester, Virginia, the son of the late Ellis E. and Emily Harbaugh Ribble and stepson of the late Rev. Arthur L. Ribble. He graduated from Handley High School, Class of 1956 and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Winchester until the family left the Winchester area in 1956. Mr. Harbaugh served honorably in the United States Coast Guard from 1961 to 1967. He joined the Warrenton Volunteer Rescue Squad in 1974, where he was a lifetime member and actively served for 20 years. During his active duty with the rescue squad he served as Squad Chaplain and two terms as president of the squad. Mr. Harbaugh attended St. James Episcopal Church in Warrenton where he was a lay-reader. In December of 2001, Mr. Harbaugh returned to Winchester for retirement after thirty years of service in the Federal Government. Bill was an active volunteer at Winchester Medical Center since his return to Winchester. He was a member of the Winchester Kiwanis Club, as was his father before him. Since 2010, he has attended and served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister at Meade Memorial Episcopal Church in White Post, Virginia.
His wife of 34 years, Diane M. Harbaugh, preceded him in death on February 11, 2010.
Bill is survived by his companion, Emily Schelin; daughter, Margaret “Midge” Davis (Larry) of Malabar, Florida; son, Broward N. Moody of Culpeper, Virginia; step-sisters, Helen R. Lauver of Maryland and Leigh R. Mackay-Smith (Alexander) of White Post, Virginia; step-brother, Arthur L. Ribble, Jr. of Gainesville, Virginia; numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 11:00 am at Meade Memorial Episcopal Church in White Post, Virginia with the Rev. Mr. Howard Humphries officiating.
Prayers are requested to be read on the Sunday following his death at St. James Episcopal Church in Warrenton, Virginia, and Christ Episcopal Church in Winchester, Virginia, where he grew up.
Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Harbaugh may be made to a rescue squad of the donor’s choice.
