Warner Ayres Eliot, 98 of Winchester, VA, passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at his home.
Warner was born in 1925 in Cleveland, OH, the son of the late Theodore and Mignon Eliot. He attended Reed College in Portland Oregon until he was drafted for service in WWII. Warner fulfilled his service by enrolling in the Navy’s V-12 Program at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Upon graduating with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, he was commissioned as an Ensign and served our country on active duty in the United States Navy until the conclusion of WWII. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and was honorably discharged. Over his career as an engineer, he was an active member of the IEEE. He spent 14 years at The MITRE Corporation, where he authored many technical reports and was part of management. He retired from MITRE in 1983. He played the trumpet and performed with the Little German Band of State College, PA. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and gardening with his wife in his younger years.
He married his one and only love, Amy Frances Barnes on February 8, 1947, in Memphis, TN. They were married for 62 years and lived a quiet life. They loved birding, gardening, and armchair travel. Amy preceded him in death on November 17, 2009.
Warner is survived by his daughter, Kristin Benitez (Alex) of Lovettsville, VA; grandchildren, Katie Hill of Front Royal, VA, Amy Jordan (Tyler) of Farmington, NM, Anna Wislocky (Devin) of Mechanicsburg, PA and Thomas Benitez of Fort Branch, IN and great-grandchildren, Avery, Ainslie, Eliot, Jake, Allison, Beckett and Cooper.
Along with his parents and wife, Warner is preceded in death by his sisters, Henrietta Garstka and Calista Hamill and brothers, Theodore Eliot, Jr., Andrew Eliot and Michael Eliot.
Services for Warner will be private.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Warner to the Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury (SVWC) Employee Appreciation Fund.
