Walter Wayne Miller, Col. U.S.A.F., Ret.
Walter Wayne Miller, age 78, of Frederick County, VA, died Friday, July 2, 2010 at the Winchester Medical Center. He was born in Frederick County, VA, the son of Walter and Marjorie Miller. He graduated from Gainesboro High School in1950 and from VPI in 1955. He received his commission into the Air Force following graduation from VPI.
He held command and staff positions in various units. Two of his most favorites were Training Command where he taught others to fly combat and Check Section of the Communications Command checking radar systems, satilites,etc. all over the U.S.. Shortly after retiring in 1982 from U.S.A.F. he worked for Frederick County as the Zoning Administrator retiring in1996. He was a past president of the Round Hill Ruritan Club.
During his years of service he earned the following decorations: The Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with Five Oak Leaf Clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Two Oak Leaf Clusters and V Device, Bronze Star, Combat Readiness Medal, Air Force Commendation Metal, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Meritorious Service Metal.
He married Wilda Jean Adams Miller on December 18, 1954 in Frederick County, VA. Surviving with his wife are two children, Paula Lee Mertz (Charlie) of Katy, TX and Jerry Wayne Miller of Winchester, VA; Five grandchildren, Jeanne Maree Walker (Paul), Jeremy Wayne Miller, Dana Lee Mertz, Charles E. Mertz Jr.(Andrea}, Warren W. Mertz; Two great grandchildren, Jacob A. Walker and Nicolas S. Walker.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 5-7 pm on Thursday July 8, 2010 with the funeral service to follow at 7:00 PM in the Omps Funeral Home Amherst Chapel. Pastor Robert Morris of Ebenezer Christian Church will officiate.
