In Loving Memory of Vijay Kanbur
January 6, 1957 – October 8, 2026
Vijay Laxmanrao Kanbur, age 69, passed away on October 8, 2026, in Winchester, VA. A successful Human Resources professional in the IT industry and a cofounder of HRIA Mumbai, he was, above all, a man with a big heart and an extraordinary capacity for giving. Funny, fiercely independent, endlessly resourceful, and the life of every gathering, he had a gift for making friends wherever he went. A gifted orator, teacher, mentor, and a fiercely loyal friend, he was the person people turned to for help, knowing he would do everything in his power to be there for them. His love was expressed through acts of service, quietly making life better for those around him. Even though life brought its share of disappointments, he never let them harden his heart. He continued to see the good in people, never held grudges, and lived by his personal motto of having zero expectations to be happy. He found joy in life’s simplest pleasures and had a rare ability to make the ordinary extraordinary.
To his children, he was their Kalpavriksha—the giving tree. He shared 40 loving years with his beloved wife, Vijaya, expressing his love through thoughtful gifts and frequent reminders to care for herself. A perfectionist who took pride in fixing things and making every celebration special, he also had an extraordinary eye for beauty, capturing nature and loved ones through his photography. He was an avid traveler, a passionate foodie, and incredibly inquisitive about the minute details of a wide range of topics. For his age, he was exceptionally tech-savvy and up to date with the happenings in the world. Since last year, his greatest joy has been his cherished granddaughter.
He leaves behind a legacy of generosity, grace, laughter, and wholehearted living. He is survived by his beloved wife, Vijaya Kanbur (née Mirji), daughter Dr. Vineeta Kanbur-Nitturkar, son Viraj Kanbur, son-in-law Dr. Abhishek Nitturkar, granddaughter Advika Nitturkar, and brothers Jayant & Balwant Kanbur. He will be profoundly missed and forever cherished by all whose lives he touched.
A traditional Hindu service and final rites will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, located at: 1600 Amherst Street, Winchester, VA 22601.
