Tom (Hugh T.) Shoemaker

Tom (Hugh Thomas) Shoemaker, 59, of Cross Junction, Virginia, died Sunday, July 22, 2012, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Shoemaker was born in 1952, in Hammond, Louisiana, the son of the late Fred Sanford and Vera Mae Shoemaker. He was a Veteran serving in the United States Army from 1972 to 1992, including service in Desert Storm. He retired with 20 years of service, after achieving the rank of CW2. Mr. Shoemaker was a proud member of the Gainesboro Fire and Rescue Company 16, a dedicated mentor for the Frederick County 4-H Shooting Club, and life member of the VFW. He volunteered at Gainesboro Elementary School and Indian Hollow Elementary School.

He married Julie Kay Getz on November 21, 1978, in Sierra Vista, Arizona.

Surviving with his wife of 33 years, are two daughters, Heather Lynn Ludwick and husband, Jason, of Capon Bridge, West Virignia, Ashley Rae Shoemaker of Cross Junction, son, Hunter Austin Shoemaker of Cross Junction; two grandsons, Dakota Matthew Ludwick and Dominik Ryan Ludwick, brother, Donald of Florida; sisters-in-law, Brigitte Shoemaker of Raleigh, North Carolina and Rosalyn Shoemaker of Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, Frank Shoemaker and Ambrose “Bob” Shoemaker, preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 PM on Friday, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Military honors accorded by VFW Post 2123. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends on Friday, prior to the service, from 2:00-4:00 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gainesboro Fire and Rescue, 221 Gainesboro Road, Winchester, Virginia 22603 or the American Cancer Society, 2654 Valley Avenue, Suite B., Winchester, Virginia 22601.
