Thomas R. Hughes
Thomas Ray Hughes, 82, of Winchester, Virginia, died Thursday, July 12, 2012, at Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Hughes was born in 1929, in Lynchburg, Virginia, the son of Harry Clay and Flora Hughes. His step mother, Mae Brandt Hughes, encouraged his further education. He was a Program Manager and Electrical Engineer with Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Baltimore, Maryland, retiring after 34 years of service. He was a graduate of Gladys High School and Lynchburg College, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Math and Physics. In addition he was a graduate of the University of Michigan, receiving a Bachelor of Science Engineering Degree, and completed graduate work at several other universities. He was a Veteran having served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. Mr. Hughes was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society. After retiring he moved to Virginia Beach and then to Winchester. He was a member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church and Winchester Moose Lodge, #1283.
His first wife, Edith Long Hughes preceded him in death in 1976.
He married Mary Atkinson Mullis in June 1979.
Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Joan E. Hynson and husband, David, of Ellicott City, Maryland, Joyce Colzani and husband, Enrico, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; niece, Kathryn Pohlmeyer of Columbia, Maryland; three stepchildren, Estella Mullis, Tyrus Mullis and Cletus Mullis all of Winchester; five grandchildren, Holly, Shelley and Andrew Hynson, Emma and Eliana Colzani; step grandchildren, Aimee, Matthew and Ryan Chiglinsky and Juliana Darrah-Mullis, daughter of Cletus Mullis; step great grandchildren, Destynee Laurito and Reese, Grayson and Rylan Mary Chiglinsky.
A son, Thomas Lee Hughes and sister, Kathryn Hughes Pohlmeyer preceded him in death.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 16 at Braddock Street United Methodist Church with Reverend Kirk Nave and Reverend Williams Hughes Pollock officiating. Interment will be in Wesleybury United Methodist Church Cemetery, Gladys, Virginia.
The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon, July 15, from 2:00-4:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, Winchester, Virginia.
