Thomas P. Carey
Thomas Patrick Carey, 83, of Winchester, Virginia, died Thursday, June 24, 2010, in Winchester Medical Center. He was born in 1926, in Kearny, New Jersey, the son of the late Harriet Smock Carey and Patrick Daniel Carey.
Mr. Carey was a veteran of the United States Army, having served from February 1945 to December 1946 in World War II as a Sergeant stationed in the Philippines. Mr. Carey received a Masters in Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in Castle Point, New Jersey, retired from Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in June 1988; taught physics at Shepherd University for five years in his retirement. During his working career he co-authored a textbook in computer simulation, received two patents and wrote numerous technical articles for engineering publication.
His second wife, Peggy Sechrist Carey, whom he married on April 20, 1996, survives him. He is also survived by his daughter, Susan Carey Brandt and husband, Rick, of Charlottesville, Virginia ; a son, David Bruce Carey and wife, Sheryl, of Damascus, Maryland; step-daughter, Holly Buck and husband Jeremy; grandsons, Ryan Carey, Brendan Carey, Colton Brandt and Christian Brandt; two step-grandsons, Ryland and Carter Buck; step-granddaughter, Lindsey Buck; and his brother James Frances Carey of Barnegat, New Jersey.
He was Vice-President of Senseny Glen Homeowners Association and President of Shenandale Homeowners Association; Commodore of sailing association; President of the DC-RC Club, organized and participated in several Adopt-A-Highway programs and a volunteer for the I.R.S.-AARP Tax Program.
Mr. Carey’s many hobbies attested to his love of life and learning. Personal excellence was his standard and he sought this goal in all aspects of his work and play. His hobbies were vast. He enjoyed flying model airplanes, winemaking, classical music and the arts. Due to his passion for knowledge, he was an avid reader. His love of sailing led him to win awards in both cruising and racing sailboats. In his later years, age was never a deterrent. He enjoyed traveling, camping, and kayaking.
Thomas Carey was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, deeply loved by his family and all who knew him.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 2, 2010 at Omps Funeral Home. Amherst Chapel with Reverend Dan McCoig officiating.
