Thomas John “Ghon” Eckley

Thomas John Eckley, 80, of Frederick County, Virginia, passed away, Thursday, March 25, 2010, in the Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Eckley was born in 1929 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Genevieve C. Eckley of Pennsylvania and the late John N. Eckley. He retired in 1989, as a Technician for Wards in Landover, Maryland.

Mr. Eckley married Betty Ann Caswell on September 22, 1988 in Mount Rainer, Maryland.

Surviving with his mother and his wife of twenty-one years; are eight children, Deborah Wodell of Chicago , Illinois, Cynthia Eckley of Rockville, Maryland, Anna Suhar of Lakeworth, Florida, Peter Eckley of Sanford, North Carolina, Ghon B. Eckley of Frederick, Maryland, Charles Caswell and Anna VanLaeken, both of Winchester, Virginia, and Robin Maher of Durham, North Carolina; twenty – three grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a brother, Richard Eckley of New Lebanon, Ohio; and a sister, Nancy O. St.John of Bowie, Maryland. His first wife, Linda M. Vikingstad, preceded him in death in April of 1982 and his second wife, Kate Munier Brooks, preceded him in death on May 20, 1987.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Monday at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel. Entombment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 9:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to North Mountain Volunteer Fire and Rescue, 186 Rosenberger Lane, Winchester, Virginia 22602.

Hello Eckley Family, It is with much sadness to find this while looking for my Grandmothers Birth records. I have been trying to do our family tree for my children. While in the process of trying to locate her parents names, I came across Ghon's obituary and my heart sank. I am Kate's granddaughter Shantel. Ghon had kept in touch with me a few times in past years, even sending me family photos my grandmother had left behind. He was such a dear man. He would write even when his eyes/hands were failing him and asked me to excuse his penmanship. My Grandmother loved him very dearly and she was very well cared for by him.
