Rick Foster left a message on January 9, 2025:
What can I say that won't sound like typical hyperbole about a passing friend? Kevin Lowry was smart, funny, caring... He worked hard at his business for decades, and had just reached the point where he could retire and relax with his loving wife Robin, when the diagnosis of bladder cancer was made over a year ago. He thought he had kicked it when, nearly a year ago it had returned as lung cancer, which had metastisized. He lasted longer than the doctors expected, but the end was inevitable. I loved him like a brother. We shared many things. We both enjoyed talking for hours about our pasts as boomer-era kids. We also shared a love of music and of photography. He was a northerner, growing up in New Haven, Conneticut. This intrigued me as a southern boy. He had connections to New York City. He had an uncle that was the lead singer of the Five Satins, a doo wop group that put out the million-selling hit "In the Still of the Night" in 1954. He oversaw a crew of workers that maintained several buildings in a large insurance complex. He was also a cyclist in his younger years, something we shared. He owned a Lambert bike that I had longed for as a young cyclist in Richmond. We met in the late 1980s when we both had started working at The Winchester Star. He was raising two kids from an earlier marriage and eventually left there to start his own business as a window and glass cleaner "to the stars." By that I mean that he specialized in large, often uniquely designed homes all around the region. It's hard to grasp that I will never be able to talk with him again. Kevin's laugh and smiles will be missed by all who knew him.
