Terry Eugene Funkhouser, Sr., born on October 22, 1948 in Winchester, VA, passed away June 21, 2023 at Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester, VA at the age of 74.

Terry was a graduate of James Wood High School in 1967 and went on to study Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech. He met his beloved wife Patty Crim Funkhouser in 1967 and the two married on June 13, 1971. Together, they navigated life’s joys and challenges, creating a home filled with love, so many cherished memories and laughter… LOTS of laughter.

As a father, Terry was a beacon of wisdom and support for his daughter Tracey and son TJ. He was their champion, their mentor, and one of their biggest supporters, always there to provide a listening ear and a comforting embrace.

In his leisure time, Terry found solace in life’s simpler pleasures. From playing his weekly round of golf with his buddies to just sitting on the porch with Patty and talking to the neighbors walking by, Terry really enjoyed a slower pace of life. When he needed a little more excitement in his later years, Terry found great happiness in being a substitute teacher for elementary schools in Frederick County. While his own son and daughter still wonder where his patience was when they were young children, Terry beamed with excitement when he got a call asking him to come substitute teach for a class that day…. and shared story after story with infectious excitement after he got home. And, if you wanted to see a grown man’s heart melt in front of you, just watch him as one of his students yells “Hi, Mr. Funkhouser!!!” from afar as he or she sees him out in public.

A consummate storyteller, Terry loved to entertain anyone who would listen with his long-drawn-out stories (oftentimes repeated, but always amusing) and prescribed to the “don’t let facts get in the way of a good story” modus operandi. A favorite would be the time he inexplicably decided to shake up the salsa without realizing that Patty had already loosened the lid. His family has gotten a lot of laughter out of that one… and they will always treasure all of the laughter and memories shared in that wonderful home.

Terry is preceded in death by his parents Eugene Davis Funkhouser and Betty Marie Funkhouser. He is survived by his wife Patty with whom he recently celebrated their 52nd anniversary, his children Tracey (Matthew) and TJ (Carola), his three beloved grandchildren Gillianne, Aidan and Wyatt and numerous extended family and friends that he held dear.
