Susan Ford Dick Turnbull, 76, of Winchester, Virginia and formerly of Greenwich Connecticut died at her home on Monday July 6th.
Susan was born May 24th, 1939, in Winchester, the daughter of Charles Hoover Dick and Lucille Webber Dick. She was a member of Handley High School’s class of 1957. She attended Marymount College of Arlington and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Marquette University in Milwaukee in 1961. She began a career at Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia teaching English. Soon after, she met Harrison James Turnbull in Washington, DC where he was the director of the American Maritime Association. In 1964, they married and had 3 sons, Harrison Drew Turnbull, Charles Christopher Turnbull, and Brooke Hamilton Turnbull.
In 1969 she and Jim moved to Greenwich, Connecticut where Jim continued to work in the maritime industry. Susan began consulting on Greenwich Library’s “Raising the Roof” campaign. It was the beginning of a career in public relations working with the Fairfield County Agency on Aging, The Nathaniel Witherell nursing center, Putnam County National Bank, St. Catherine’s of Siena and for a number of organizations. Eventually she established her own public relations firm based on Arch Street in Greenwich. Susan was a devout Catholic who spent a great deal of her time and energy promoting the church within Fairfield County and beyond.
She returned to Winchester after her father, Charles Hoover Dick died and prior to her mother, Lucille Webber Dick’s passing. Harrison James Turnbull died in Winchester in 1998. She is survived by her three sons, Harrison Drew Turnbull and his wife Kathryn Robshaw Turnbull, Dr. Charles Christopher Turnbull and his wife Adelaide Avery Turnbull, Brooke Hamilton Turnbull, and his wife Amanda Townsend Turnbull, and seven grandchildren. Her four brothers, Charles Gregory Dick, John Matthew Dick and his wife Sally, James Benjamin Dick, Thomas Joseph Dick and his wife Trish, her two sisters, Anne Clare Dick Morrison, Cecilia Dick Burton and her husband Neil Burton, her nephews Matthew Dick, Mark Dick, Luke Dick, Alec Morrison, Tyler Dick, Daniel Burton and her nieces Kathryn Dick, Sara Dick, Julia Dick, Amy Dick, Leah Dick, and Christine Dick. Her great aunt Jane Dick Jolley, cousins Martha Reese, Jeffrey Webber, Vicky Webber, Jack Webber and wife Laurie.
Susan will be dearly missed for her caring nature, her strong character and her love of so many of life’s simple pleasures. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 5:30 – 7:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Saturday at 11am at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church on Keating Drive in Winchester with Father Brendan Bartlett officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Virginia followed by a reception at the Dick family home on Amherst Street. Memorial contributions in Susan’s name may be made to Catholic Charities. Flowers can be sent to Omps Funeral Home at 1600 Amherst Street in Winchester.
