Sue M. Bonnett, 94, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 2:10 AM at Westminster Canterbury.
Born on September 20, 1931, in Warrenton, Virginia, Sue was the daughter of the late William Rice Matthews and Ruth Lillian (Grubbs) Matthews. She graduated from Stuart Hall School in Staunton, Virginia, and went on to earn an Associate’s Degree from Shenandoah University.
Sue lived a vibrant, full, and accomplished life. She was a dedicated public servant, serving as a school board member for Winchester Public Schools, where she also worked for a time as a teacher’s aide. Later, she enjoyed a successful career in the local real estate industry as a Realtor with Colony Realty.
A woman of diverse talents and boundless energy, Sue proudly earned her pilot’s license and hit the ski slopes well into her 60s. She was blessed with the opportunity to travel the world, but also thoroughly enjoyed the simple pleasures closer to home. She was an avid poker and bridge player, and her family will always fondly remember the pure excitement and joy she expressed whenever she won a hand. Sue was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Boyd J. Hamman, and her second husband, William F. Bonnett, as well as her brothers, Bill Matthews, and Clyde Matthews.
Sue is survived by her loving children: daughter Joyce M. Hamman, and sons Boyd J. Hamman Jr. and R. Matthew Hamman (Debbie). She is also survived by 5 cherished grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
A small reception will be held for Sue on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 1:30pm at Westminster Canterbury.
