Stuart “Sonny” Cooper

Stuart E. “Sonny” Cooper, 81, of Winchester, Virginia, died Monday, September 12, 2011, in Blue Ridge Hospice Residential Center.

Mr. Cooper was born in 1929, in Winchester, Virginia, the son of the late St. Elmo and Elizabeth M. Cooper. He was a sales manager with Valley Food for 24 years and Halperin Company for 14 years. Mr. Cooper was a member of the Winchester Elks Lodge BPOE 867 and a past two term President of the Friendship Fire Company in Winchester. He attended John Handley High School.

He married Vivian Lake on September 17, 1949, in Winchester, Virginia. She preceded him in death on October 3, 2005.

Surviving are his children, Steven E. Cooper and wife, Debra, of Frederick, Maryland, Susan Cooper Brown and husband, David, of Winchester, Virginia, Sharon Cooper Whitfield and husband, Ed, of Bridgewater, Virginia and Scott E. Cooper and wife, Tammy, of Chesterfield, Virginia; 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; his brother, William A. Cooper of Blairsville, Georgia, and his extended families of Donna Frye and Judy Whitacre.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Reverend Steve Melester officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Virginia.

Pallbearers will be Brad Cooper, Brodie White, Greg Cooper, Buddy Frye, John O’Connor, Todd Dixon and Tommy Pifer. Honorary pallbearers will be Ed Whitfield, David Brown, Steve Whitacre, Roy Bly, Dale Shifflett and Virgil T. Brown.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Suite 405, Winchester, Virginia, 22601.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Sonny's family. I worked with Sonny while he worked at Valley Foods in Winchester, VA and he got me the job I have today. Whenever Sonny would talked to someone for the company that I work at now, he would always ask how I was doing. A very nice man who will be greatly missed.
