Mr. Ellis was born in 1934 in Richmond, Virginia, the son of the late Esther and Leonard Ellis, Sr. He was a graduate of James Wood High School and a supervisor at Crown Cork and Seal, retiring in 1998. Mr. Ellis was a member of the Stonewall Ruritan Club, the Masons, and a member of Clear Brook Volunteer Fire Department, where he was a past board member. He enjoyed pheasant hunting, fishing, gardening, and any activity that involved being outdoors. Mr. Ellis was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Men’s Group and enjoyed golfing with his church buddies.
Surviving is his wife, Mary Ellen; daughters, Penny Hounshell (Scott) of Clear Brook, Virginia, Mary Stewart Nelson (Mike) of Richlands, North Carolina, Susan Pingley (Phil) of Stephens City, Virginia, Paige Gum (David) of Berryville, Virginia; Jackie Brondstater (Brad) of Clear Brook, Virginia; son, Jim Ellis of Kearneysville, West Virginia; step-children, Stephen Mooty, Lynne Gekas, Diane Crandall, David Mooty, and Kenneth Mooty; sixteen grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; nine step- great grandchildren; sister, Beverley Fowler of Charlestown, West Virginia; and many loving nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Mr. Ellis was preceded in death by his first wife of 44 years, Christel M. Ellis and his five brothers.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 6 pm to 8 pm on Saturday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm on Sunday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with Pastor Barry Burkholder officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
