I am so very sorry to hear of Steve's passing. Steve was an inspiration to me in many ways while we worked at ATF. I will miss his visits and conversations at my desk and will miss the messages we shared up to his passing. Sending prayers of comfort to all.
Steve - I love you my Brother. Our hearts are broken as we say goodbye to you now, but only for a little while as we trust, in faith, to be reunited with you and experience the same joy that you have already felt in meeting our Savior. Thank you my friend, for all your love and support, the laughs and friendship. I know these last years were not easy, but thank you for sharing your sense of humor, and trust in God, as we communicated over the miles that were to separate us. My prayers now are for Debbie and your daughters, their husbands and your grandchildren. Thank you for the evident love you displayed for all of them, and for allowing me to grasp your hand and heart as my brother. Miss you my friend, but rest now.
Debbie, Meridith and Megan, We are very sorry to hear of Steve's passing. Our prayers go out to you and your family.
Ms. Mathis, and family. My deepest condolences to you all.
Peace of mind is a call away. We're here when you need us most.
Steve and I lived across the street from each other and spent several years as best buds. I have such great memories of he and his parents. I was so happy when he reached out a few years back and we reconnected. I enjoyed texting back and forth about the Nats and other topics. So sorry about his passing and wish his wife and 2 daughters - I have a Megan too (Meghan) the best moving forward.
Debbie and Family,
It was with deep regret that I learned of Steve's death. His mother and father were among Norm's and my first and dearest friends at Downtown Baptist Church, and Steve graduated from High School with our daughter, Etoila. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathies to Steve's family; I worked with Steve for several years at ATF; he was without a doubt one of the finest individuals I have ever had the privilege to know. I am shocked and saddened by his passing. I remember so well his humor, his absolute adoration of Debbie, his wife, and his girls-- and his ability to recreate for all of us the play by play of every game he enjoyed! I am so very sorry for your loss- I am just heartbroken.
Steve had a large presence whenever he was around, great laugh, wonderful sense of humor, joy and an abundance of love for God and family. Our prayers for the ladies in his life as well as his entire family.
Steve was a wonderful man and I’ll be forever grateful for his kindness to our family. We were blessed to know him and I will miss him. God bless him.
Debbie, Meredith, and Megan, we are so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. Ft. Hunt Youth Girls basketball was lucky to have his calm and kind demeanor. His players learned more than X's and O's as their coach. Hopefully he will catch up with Coach Smith and they can compare stories about their basketball experiences. "If God isn't a Tar Heel, then why is the sky Carolina blue."
I’ve got great memories of Steve when he worked at Agriculture. I was also a federal employee and for a few years we would meet for lunch and debate Maryland vs UNC athletics. I really looked forward to those lunches. We also both developed an interest in weight lifting and would meet at Mt Vernon Naultilus for Saturday morning workouts. They were great times and Steve’s sense of humor always helped in getting through the workouts.
Above all, what I’ll remember was Steve’s Christian witness. It never wavered. With Steve it wasn’t necessarily the talk but his actions. There was an incident where his decision made a lasting impression on me and although it was 40+ years ago, I’ll never forget it.
My sincerest condolences go out to Debbie, his daughters and grandchildren.
Our hearts are broken because we didn’t have enough time here on earth with Steve. But he is having such a better time that we are right now. I am so thankful that we started our “Mathis Cousins Text Group” that he really enjoyed. There have been some wonderful discussions taking place in there. We’ve enjoyed Steve’s wisdom and humor and Christian attitude and we are so proud to call him a fellow TarHeel.
Meredith, Megan, and Mrs. Mathis, I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Mathis's passing. I remember like it was yesterday, Mr. Mathis walking up to Waynewood pool to play tennis all those summer days. I was usually on the basketball court with my brothers and sister, and he would always stop and say hi and talk basketball with us...and you just can't think of him without picturing that Carolina blue. He was always so kind and I know he will be missed by many. My deepest sympathies to the Mathis family.
Debbie, our heartfelt condolences go out to you and the rest of your family; and our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. Love and Blessings.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I knew you from IJCANNS and every time you came in it made me smile and my day better.
So sorry to hear of Steve's passing, but the Lord needed him. My prayers are with the family in this time of loss. But there will be a great reunion in Glory to look forward to.
Debbie & Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. May God grant you peace and courage in the days to come and may our Lord bring you comfort in the midst of sorrow! Grace and Peace
Pastor Steve Melester
Steve was a wonderful man. He honored our family with his friendship and encouragement over the years -- especially to our eldest. Steve gave him great advice and took special interest in Christian's life path. We will miss his messages, and we are heartbroken for the Mathis Family's earthly loss, but we also celebrate Steve's wholeness and perfect body. No limits, just the best golf game ever. We will be with him again.
Bonnie and I were so saddened by Steve’s passing. We have fond memories dating back to the early 80’s, and are glad we were able to enjoy some time with him at a Nat’s game before his illness. Our prayers are with the family.
Peace of mind is a call away. We're here when you need us most.
Debbie, Meredith, Megan and family,
You have been on our hearts for these last days and in our prayers daily. The years we spent just down the street on Croton Drive are among our favorites in part because of the your family and the bond we had through church and friendship. Steve was and always will be a special part of that time. His commitment to God, family, and community, along with his wit and wisdom, stand him apart from others. Plus, he really enjoyed when people said he looked like Roy Williams. His is a life worthy of celebration in heaven.

To the Carter Family, I wish to extend my sincerest condolences on Steve's passing. I have nothing but fond memories of our time together while I attended what was then Downtown Baptist Church. I will remember the conversations we had about NC basketball and sports in general. I will especially remember Steve giving it his all playing softball alongside his daughter Megan, during my first years coaching the DBC co-ed softball team. Lifting you all up in prayer during this difficult time.
My heart breaks for you and your sweet family. Lifting you all up in prayer for strength and comfort during this time. Sending my love. Please give your mom and sister a hug for me.
Sending my sympathy, love and support to the Mathis family for the loss of your beloved Steve.
Such a great guy. Wonderful father and husband who loved his family. A true Christian who touched a lot of people in being so approachable and giving. I'm glad he was in my life.
We will miss him dearly! My thoughts and prayers are with the family!
I am so sorry for your loss. Prayers to the entire family . Steve was a dear friend and I will truly miss him. So many fond memories of our trips to UNC, our long phone conversations, and working together at Treasury (and sneaking into the Georgia Dome!). Steve introduced me to country music, Lewis Grizzard, and, of course, Carolina football. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was incredibly bright. A dedicated and determined father, loving husband, and friend to so many. Be comforted that he is in God's hands. God Bless.
Condolences to the Mathis and Speir families. Much love Tom and Anna.
Steve and were in a car pool together when we worked at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in our Fort Hunt high school days. What a great guy! He will be missed. My condolences to his family.
Debbie, Meredith and Megan,
I'm so sorry for the passing of Steve. He was a good Christian man - a great father, husband, and a great grandpa. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers so God will comfort you with the peace of knowing you will all see him again in Heaven! With love, Clare
Prayers for Debbie and the entire family. I know Steve will be missed.
Please accept my condolences as my prayers are with you and your family.
Please receive my deepest condolences. When Steve found out my daughter started her recovery process in the recovery connection, he would often reach out to me to see how she was doing and offer me encouragement. That was so appreciated. He will be missed!
Prayers and condolences to Debbie and the family for the loss of a wonderful human being and loved one. Steve’s memory will not be forgotten, and I pray God provides the family strength and comfort during our time of sorrow.
My heart hurts, Coach Mathis was and always will be the BEST basketball coach a gal could ask for ❤️❤️
We have such wonderful memories of doing bible studies together with Deb and Steve. Our hearts are broken. What a wonderful man full of life and love. May God grant you peace and comfort during this difficult time. We are sending every ounce of love to your family. God bless each of you.
I am so happy to have been blessed to have known Steve and Debbie in the youth department at Downtown Town Baptist. It was so evident that they were so in love then and their love for each other and love of God as always kept them strong. I know there is rejoicing in heaven and so much sadness here.
Steve was a wonderful person. We know he will be missed by many, especially his family. Love to all, Vernon and Pat Smith
Peace of mind is a call away. We're here when you need us most.
