Stephen P. Lewis Sr., 72, of Winchester, Virginia died Sunday, January 8, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Steve was born in 1944 in Winchester, Virginia, the son of the late Edward P. and Louise M. Lewis. He was a graduate of Handley High School and attended the University of Arizona. Later, Steve attended Central Shenandoah Criminal Justice Training Academy. His first retirement was from Unisource as Branch Manager/Sales, and then retiring after 35 years as a police officer with Winchester Police Department. Steve was a member of the Lions Club, Winchester City Rescue Squad, Fraternal Order of Police and a Reserve Officer with the Winchester Police Department. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons. His greatest passion was spending time with his family at home and his family at the police department. Steve attended Life Church in Stephens City, Virginia.
Steve married Jennifer Johnson on November 24, 1978 in Winchester, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife are sons, Stephen Page Lewis, Jr., Richard T. Lewis and wife Lesley, and Stephen T. Lewis and wife Ashley; grandchildren, Justin Jones, Adriana Judd, and Danielle Lewis; step-grandchildren, Cody and Ashlyn Brooks; great grandchildren, Kyleigh and Johnny Judd; brother, Phillip Lewis and wife Anne; many loving nieces, nephews, and friends, as well as his entire family at the Winchester Police Department….he loved each and every one of you.
Along with his parents Edward and Louise, Steve was preceded in death by his brother, Gregory Lewis.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Pastor Shawn Baird officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
In memory of Steve, when you see a police officer; please show your appreciation by way of a handshake, a hug, verbal thanks or any acknowledgement of gratitude for the safety they provide us. Steve would appreciate a kind act shown to his department family.

Take it with you and 6 years later or somethingyou definitely couldn't take it with you whatever it was but don't wait for me don't expect me there too soon or something it's pretty soon you might not see me at all or something like that but whatever you doing try to make the best of it or something

You didn't know everything was going to happen after the last days or something like that but and you didn't know that everything you worked for all your life or something it was going to be wasted lot of stuff you didn't know and I hope you're in a better place I hope you like it there know that they was your expectation maybe they waited there for a while or something but maybe they didn't you might not see me again you might not you might not see me again you might not see me I might be a while empty-handed 35 years later I was thinking about going to Myrtle Beach maybe they're all take it back on tomorrow pizza at the same time or something

Growing up as neighbors of the Lewis family, brings fond memories of good times and feeling like Ed, Louise, Phillip, Steve and Greg were more like family than neighbors. Good people. The Lewis Family, We remember Mr. Lewis with his smile and his wife waiting for him at Papermill on Sunday mornings for breakfast. A fine man of honor and dedicated to his job the WPD. We were fortunate enough to be setting with he and his son at the same table last May for the Apple Blossom Festival Sports Breakfast and enjoy talking with the both of them. We will honor his request when we see an officer or policeman to thank them for their service, which they so deserve. The Lewis Family, We have know Mr. Lewis from seeing him in uniform at Papermill having breakfast with his wife on Sunday mornings for many years. A fine gentleman, a great policeman and a man of honor. Always smiling. We were privileged to have been able to sit with he and his son at the Apple Blossom Sports Breakfast and enjoyed the time we spent together. In his honor we will thank policeman and law enforcement officers as we meet them in our path. May God hold each of you in the palm of his hand during this sad time and the days ahead. Dear Mrs. Lewis and family, I knew Steve from his visits to the bagel shop on Sunday mornings. My husband and I would meet there with friends, particularly Bill Sirbaugh. I was always in awe at the depth of their friendship and how much he cared for Bill, despite his serious health problems. I miss Bill and will miss Steve as well. I am sorry for your loss. He was a might fine man. I promise to hug or shake hands with a police officer in memory of Steve.

I know now that Stephen is with God and out of pain. I met him and his wife and son at Shenandoah Oncology and talked with them many times. I thank God for letting them pass thru my life. I'm so sorry I can't there because of my illness, but I want to let the family know I am thinking about them. May God bless you all.
