Stanley “Stan” Potter Stewart, Jr., 88, of Frederick County, Virginia passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at Spring Arbor Assisted Living.
Stan was born in 1928 in Camden, New Jersey, the son of the late Esther “Mer” and Stanley P. Stewart, Sr. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Engineering. Stan served in the U.S. Navy Civil Engineering Corp for 26 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War with the Fighting Seabees. Stan achieved the rank of Commander with multiple commendations. Upon retirement from the U.S. Navy, Stan had a long career with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (W.S.S.C.). In later years while living on Jekyll Island, Georgia, Stan was an elder of Jekyll Presbyterian Church, as well as a member of Lions Club, Jekyll Island Arts Association, Paupers Social Club, Sand Dollar Club and volunteered for MAP International. He enjoyed traveling, golfing, and woodworking.
His wife, Betsy Ann Stewart, whom he married on June 6, 1952 in Roanoke, Virginia preceded him in death on September 13, 2013.
Surviving are daughters, Deborah S. Franks and husband, Ronald and Linda S. Wiseman and husband, David; son, Stanley P. Stewart, III and wife, Marcia; grandchildren, Kristen F. Yates and husband, Michael, Kimberly B. Franks, Laura Trela and husband, Michael, Ronald Franks, Jr. and wife, Laura, Bryan D. and Jason M. Wiseman, and Eric M. and Malorie P. Stewart; great grandchildren, Katy, Seth, Aaron, Alyssa, Alec, and Amanda.
Along with his wife, Betsy, he was preceded in death by a sister, Caroline Comer and her husband, Walt.
Stan’s family would like to express a sincere thank you to the staff at Spring Arbor, Blue Ridge Hospice, Right at Home, and Fox Rehabilitation for the love, care and support that was given to Stan and his family.
Services will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
