Sortis James Pappas, 94, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the Willows of Meadow Branch with family by his side.

Born on December 11, 1931, in Atlanta, Georgia, Sortis was the son of the late James and Annie (Tassopoulos) Pappas. He honorably served his country as a Private Second Class in the United States Army. A dedicated lifelong learner, he completed six years of higher education to earn his Master’s Degree. Sortis devoted his career to educational rehabilitation placement, helping others rebuild their lives and careers before taking his well-deserved retirement.

Sortis was a devout member and served many years in the alter at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Winchester. Above all else, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle whose warmth and steady guidance centered his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Kostantina “Connie” (Kossiaras) Pappas; his daughter, Ann Pappas Coverstone (Greg) of Stephenson, VA; his son, James Sortis Pappas of Silver Spring, MD; his brother, Julian Pappas of Atlanta, GA; four cherished grandchildren, Demitri Pappas (Sarah), Lawrence Pappas, Aspacia Coverstone, and Zachary Coverstone; his great-granddaughter, Isabelle Pappas; and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 1700 Amherst St, Winchester, VA 22601. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM with Father Neilos Beverly officiating.

Interment with U.S. Army military honors will follow at Mount Hebron Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception at the Omps Funeral Home Reception Center immediately following the burial services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Sortis may be made to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 1700 Amherst St, Winchester, VA 22601.
