Sarah Elizabeth Kern
Sarah Elizabeth Kern, 97, of Mt. Lake Park, Maryland, passed away at her home on Wednesday, May 30, 2012.
Born 1914 in Gainesboro, VA, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Lucy B. Fout. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Charles Edward Kern, Sr., brothers, Frank L. Fout, Belmont Fout, Jack Fout, Vance Fout and sisters, Margaret McIlwee Smith, Evelyn Godlove, Caroline Secrist, Jane Delaney and Frances Fout. She was the last remaining member of her immediate family.
Sarah is survived by her son, Charles E. “Pat” Kern, Jr. and wife, Heidi, of Oakland, MD; two daughters, Ann Kern Whitacre of Winchester, Deborah Hinkle and husband, Roy, of Mt Lake Park, MD; granddaughter, Mary Beth DeMartino and husband, Ty, of Frostburg, MD grandson, Rob Johnson of Canonsburg, PA and great grandchildren, Holden and Sam DeMartino, Jacob Johnson and her dearest friend, Aleta Friend of Oakland, MD.
She was the oldest member of Gainesboro United Methodist Church in Gainesboro, VA and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Moorefield, WV.
Sarah worked at the National Fruit plant as an apple peeler in Winchester and F.C. Cook and Co., in Buckhannon, WV.
Sarah was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was interested in the Civil War, politics and was an avid reader.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Reverend Bill Withers and Reverend George Fletcher officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Gainesboro Cemetery.
