Sandra Ann Dunkle (Watterson), known affectionately as “Sandy,” age 85, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home.
Sandy was born on June 6, 1940, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Alton “AD” Douglas Watterson and Eva Rose Watterson (Couch). She graduated from Illinois Central College with an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts, a foundation that paved the way for a highly successful and fulfilling career. For many years, Sandy worked as a dedicated paralegal for Bruce Billman, Attorney at Law, until her well-earned retirement in 2012.
A woman who truly possessed a servant’s heart, Sandy took immense pride in being an active leader within her community. She was the former president of her college sorority and carried that leadership spirit throughout her life. Sandy served as the Chair of the Northwestern Community Services Board, she spent sixteen years dedicating her time to the Belle Grove Foundation, where she served as both Secretary and Chairman of the Board of Directors and was on the Gifts Committee for her beloved Apple Blossom Festival.
Her faith was a guiding cornerstone of her life. As a deeply devoted member of Kernstown United Methodist Church, Sandy held numerous leadership positions over the years, always eager to give back to her congregation. Outside of her community work, Sandy loved traveling with her family. She always held a special place in her heart for Birmingham, Alabama, and cherished the summers spent making memories with her loved ones at Lake Martin.
Sandy shared a beautiful life with her beloved husband, Dr. Richard “Ric” Lynwood Dunkle, whom she married on May 16, 1981, in Sacramento, California.
In addition to her husband, Ric, she is survived by her devoted children: daughter, Kristi Leigh Anglin Epstein (Dr. David); and sons, Dr. Michael Scott Anglin (Noele) and Ryan Dunkle. She was the proud grandmother of five grandchildren: Megan Jeter (Chris), Abigail Anglin, Emilie Epstein, Ian Epstein, and Morgan Dunkle; and the adoring great-grandmother of Madeline and Michael Jeter.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, the late Dr. Douglas “Doug” Watterson and the late Dr. Eugene “Gene” Watterson.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026, from 6pm to 8pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A Memorial Service celebrating Sandy’s life will be held at Kernstown United Methodist Church, on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 11am. Officiating will be by Rev. Dr. Victor Gomez. A reception for family and friends will follow the service at the church.
