Ruby Kathleen Orndoff, of Capon Springs, West Virginia, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, February 8, 2026.
Born in Hancock County, Tennessee, on June 10, 1931, Ruby was the daughter of Joseph Edens and Lillie Louise Edens. She graduated from Clarke County High School in Berryville, Virginia, in 1948. Ruby lived a life rooted in warmth, creativity, and true Southern hospitality. In her early years, while raising her daughter, she baked cakes professionally and became known for her beautiful homemade creations. She later worked for many years as an operator at Charles Town Race Track, where she eventually retired. Ruby also was a Sunday school teacher for children of varying ages and served as the church pianist at Grace Bible Fellowship in Clearbrook, Virginia. She was an original charter member of the church.
Ruby was a spirited, gracious woman who never let a plate or glass sit empty in her home. Her cooking was unforgettable — the kind of food that kept you coming back for more. She loved painting country landscapes, tending to her roses, and sipping coffee from her cherished flowered teacups. Her backyard was a sanctuary where she fed birds and local wildlife, even befriending a crow she fondly named Elijah and a particularly fat squirrel she called Justin, both of whom visited her daily.
“She tended roses and painted softly, but her spirit carried a spark — and a truthfulness — that made her unforgettable.”
She was preceded in death by her husband’s Henry Orndoff, Joseph Miller, and Elmer Burleson; and by her siblings Bruce Edens, Thomas Edens, Stanley Edens, Howard Edens, Bernice Elliot, Bobbi Burhite, Elizabeth (Betty) Racer, and Jean Montonera.
Ruby is survived by her daughter, Ramona McDonald of New Market, Virginia (husband Henry Mark McDonald); her grandchildren Harold Mason III (Chip) of New Market, Virginia, Jillian Mason of New Market, Virginia, Nicole Smith of New Market, Virginia (husband Christopher Smith), and Mark Daniel McDonald of New Market, Virginia; her great grandchildren Andrew Smith, Lily Smith, Brooklyn Mason, Daniel Leo McDonald, and Decklyn Clark; and her great great grandchildren Everest Ray Smith and Ronald Keith. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Edens of Winchester, Virginia.
Ruby’s legacy lives on in the family she loved the art she created, and the countless small kindnesses she offered to everyone who stepped through her door.
A visitation will be held on Monday, February 16, 2026. at 11am with a service to follow at 12pm all held at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel. Entombment will be private.
