Roxanna Lee Spencer passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at 93 years of age. She was born in 1931 and was raised in Iowa by her parents, M.E. “Dick” Spencer and Eunice Ballhorn Spencer. She was a graduate of the University of Iowa and was a Hawkeye till the end. Surviving are her two brothers, Roy. H. Spencer in Missouri and Reid E. Spencer in Iowa. Their families leave multiple surviving nieces and nephews.
Roxie began her teaching career in 1951 in her hometown, Wheatland, IA. In the ensuing 40 years, she taught from first to eighth graders in 5 states and 8 school districts from Maryland to California. She is proud knowing that in the course of her career she helped in the education of almost 2,000 children.
After retirement, Roxie, who had a life-long love of almost any kind of animal, especially cats, was able to give more fully of her time, energy and even a little bit of money for their health and safety.
She and her 65-year best friend, Jackie Zehring, are both pleased that they have been able to support animal causes from coast to coast and worldwide.
