Obituary for Rose Ellen Butler
Rose Ellen Ramsburg Butler, 86, of Winchester, Virginia, peacefully passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2012.
Mrs. Butler was born in 1925 in Berryville, Virginia, the daughter of the late David Luther and Laura Ellen Ramsburg. She was preceded in death by her husband Harry William Butler, Jr., whom she married in 1946, as well as her sisters Louise R. Berlin, Elizabeth R. Heskett, Charlotte R. Haines, and her brothers, D. Oscar Ramsburg, George W. Ramsburg, and Charles S. Ramsburg, and brother- and sister- in- law Joseph E. and Nancy H. Butler.
Surviving are her son, Harry William Butler, III, and his wife , Linda Snyder Butler, of Doswell, Virginia; her daughter, Elizabeth Carrington Butler of Winchester; two grandsons, Harry William Butler, IV, of Centreville, Virginia, and Morgan Wyatt Butler and his wife, Casey, of Charlottesville, Virginia; and two great granddaughters, Ruth Ellen Butler and Evelyn Grace Butler of Charlottesville. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Anne Butler Vaughan and her husband, John, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, their spouses and children. The family would also like to recognize Tania Michael, who became a beloved second daughter to Rose Ellen.
Mrs. Butler graduated from Berryville High School and attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg. She went on to become a teacher in the Clarke County and Winchester Public Schools, then at Braddock Street Methodist Kindergarten, where she also served as director. She also worked in several medical offices and retail establishments around Winchester.
She was member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church, where she had served on the Official Board and had actively participated in the projects of the United Methodist Women.
Community service was also very important to Rose Ellen. She worked with the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, chairing the Ladies’ Luncheon and the Coronation Committees. She volunteered with the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and C-Cap. She also was a past member of the Ambassadors Club of the Chamber of Commerce.
Rose Ellen had also been a member and Past President of the Women’s Civic League, the Lord Fairfax Garden Club, the Garden Club Council of Winchester, and The Virginia State Horticultural Council.
The family would like to commend the staffs of Lynn- Care and of Spring Arbor Homes for the excellent attention and care they gave to Rose Ellen in her last two years.
A memorial service will be held this Friday at 11:00 at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Reverend Thomas Berlin, nephew of the deceased, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service, beginning at 10:00. At the conclusion of the service, a reception will be held at Braddock Street United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Shenandoah Memorial Park at 1:30. Friends are welcome to join the family there.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Women of the Braddock Street United Methodist Church in honor of Rose Ellen’s many years of dedication to that organization.
