Roberta S. Bayliss

Roberta Showalter Gray Bayliss, age 82, of Frederick County, Virginia, died Sunday, January 8, 2012, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Bayliss was born in 1929, in Winchester, Virginia, the daughter of the late Robert C. Showalter and Isabella Showalter Metz.

Roberta graduated from Boyce Agricultural High School. She was employed by The C & P Telephone Company in Winchester and among other jobs, she was the auditor for Howard Johnson Motor Lodge. She also owned and operated the Mohawk Motel in Round Hill.

She married Edwin A. Bayliss, Jr. on April 6, 1968 in Winchester. Mr. Bayliss preceded her in death in September 2010.

Roberta is survived by two children by her first marriage to Beverly H. Gray; Sharon L. Gray of Santa Monica, California and Beverly A. Gray of Frederick County, Virginia; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren She is also survived by two step-daughters, Sandra Funk of North Carolina and Sylvia Seal of Berryville, Virginia; a number of step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday at Shenandoah Memorial Park, Frederick County, Virginia, with Reverend Ken Patrick Officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2654 Valley Ave., Suite B, Winchester, VA 22601

Arrangements are being handled by Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

Dear Sherry and Allen, I was so sad to read of your Mom's passing and send you my best wishes for your peace and comfort. I have wonderful memories of the time when our parents were the best of buds and we spent so much time together as families when we were young. I especially remember when our fathers worked long hours into the night in my father's barn building a boat, only to have it sink on its maiden voyage on the Shenandoah! They soon corrected the problem and spent many days on the river together. I will always remember your Mom's laugh and her indomitable spunk and spirit. I hope life has treated you both well.
