Robert Vernon Smith, Sr., 86 of Strasburg, Virginia, died Thursday, October 10, 2013, in his home surrounded by his family.
Mr. Smith was born in 1927, in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of the late Samuel E. and Gladys M. Smith. He was a graduate of Glen Burnie High School in Glen Burnie, Maryland and attended the University of Maryland. Mr. Smith was a Veteran of World War II having served in the Navy, achieving the rank of Seaman 2nd Class. He received the WWII Victory Medal. Mr. Smith was a Sales Executive with Electrolux for over 25 years, retiring in 1975. After retirement he started entrepreneurship in Real Estate Development.
Bob was a sports enthusiast, especially for golf and baseball. Growing up in Baltimore, he was naturally an Orioles fan. He played minor league baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers around 1949. Fishing, boating, raising peacocks, and a general love for all sorts of dogs were defining characteristics of his life. Another hobby he had was collecting stamps over the years. More so than any of these, his family and his grandchildren were the center of his attention.
He married Louise Elizabeth Woodall on August 7, 1948, in Dorsey, Maryland.
Surviving with his wife, is a daughter, Jamie Lynn Smith and wife, Leigh Conner, of Washington, D.C.; sons, Robert Vernon Smith, Jr., of Baltimore, Maryland, Cary W. Smith and wife, Kate, of Winchester, Virginia; grandchildren, Jennifer L. Dennis and husband, Joseph, Graham T. Smith and wife, Katrina, Devon E. Smith, Keighley C. Gore and husband, Levi, and Ethan M. Smith; great grandchildren, Adaelyn Mae Gore, Caedon Bushrod Gore. A third great-grandchild is on the way. One sister, Corrine S. Englehart and brother, Richard E. Smith, preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 1-2 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted on Monday at 2 PM, with Pastor Karen Adams Officiating at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
