Robert “Bob” Stephen Hartman, 84, of Frederick County, Virginia, died Sunday, March 15, 2015, in Blue Ridge Hospice Residential Center.
Mr. Hartman was a graduate of Columbia University where he received a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree. He was Columbia’s first All-American wrestler and came in 4th in the NCAA Wrestling Championships in 1951. Mr. Hartman was a veteran having served in the United States Army from 1955—1957, in Korea. He coached the Far East Army wrestling team while there. Mr. Hartman was a Professor of Physical Education at SUNY at Farmingdale. He started the National Junior College Wrestling Championships and was twice voted Wrestling Coach of the Year.
In 1973, Bob was selected to be the coach of the Greco-Roman wrestling team in the World University Games in Moscow. He was also the wrestling team leader in the Junior Pan-American Games in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1978. His name can be found in numerous places in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame at Oklahoma State University as both a wrestler and coach. He retired from SUNY at the age of 48.
Mr. Hartman was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. He served for 16 years on the Frederick County Parks and Recreation Commission. He was a member of the Board of Directors at North Mountain Fire and Rescue for several terms. In addition he served on the Advisory Committee for the Sanitary District of Shawneeland.
Bob and his wife, Nancy, met in 1944 at Wyoming Seminary Prep School in Kingston, Pennsylvania and celebrated 60 years of marriage on December 27, 2014.
Surviving with his wife, are daughters, Judy Brown (Joe) and Holly Flynn (John); son, Robert S. Hartman, Jr “Butch” (Laura); and 11 grandchildren.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at a later date.
