Robert Augustus Norman, Jr., age 82, formerly of Leesburg, passed away on Friday, October 20, 2017, at Westminster Canterbury in Winchester.
Bob was born on September 20, 1935 in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Robert Augustus and Eloise Gibbs Norman, Sr. He was a graduate of Washington and Lee High School in Arlington and continued his education at VPI through the GI Bill where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. He received his Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Northern Colorado. Bob was a veteran of the United States Army where he received a sharp shooter medal.
Bob also showed a proficiency for language and attended the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, prior to his eventual overseas deployment in the 1950’s. Bob met and married the love of his life, Marilyn Ruth Adams (Lonnie), while he was stationed in Germany. They eventually settled in Leesburg after their return to the United States, during which Bob completed a career of federal government service and teaching. Bob especially loved to garden, play tennis and golf and spend time on his tractor. Most of all, Bob was a doting grandfather to his six grandchildren sharing his love of history and travel with them. Bob also served on the vestry at St. James Episcopal Church and Church of Our Saviour at Oatlands and was active in the Men’s Club of Oatlands.
Lonnie preceded Bob in death on July 29, 2016. Bob is survived by his daughters, Jan N. Potts (Bill) of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania and Kimberly N. Nelson (David) of Charleston, West Virginia; six grandchildren, Ben Potts (Jessica) of Havertown, Pennsylvania, Michael Potts (Lucy) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Jeffrey Potts of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, David F. Nelson, Jr., of Arlington, Virginia, Marilyn M. Nelson of Avon, Connecticut, and Peter N. Nelson of Charleston, West Virginia; one great grandchild, Clara Beth Potts; one sister, Marion Norman Chinn (John) of Richmond, Virginia and nephew John-Robert Chinn, of Richmond, Virginia.
A celebration of life will be conducted on November 24 at 1:30 pm. in the chapel of Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury, Winchester, Virginia with the Reverend Elizabeth Lewis officiating. Inurnment will be private at Church of Our Saviour Oatlands Cemetery, Leesburg, Virginia.
