Robert Augustus “Rusty” Griffin, 68, of Smyrna, TN passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at Inova Fairfax Hospital, with his sister by his side.

Rusty was born in 1951 in Murfreesboro, TN, son of the late Samuel and Frances Griffin. He was a graduate of Smyrna High School, joined Pi Kappa Alpha at Memphis State University, and earned an Associate’s degree from Nashville Tech. Rusty retired as President of Regal Furniture Company in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Rusty was a much loved man who never met a stranger. He could be seen in his Santa suit every Christmas season on the field at Titans Stadium, at local businesses and charity functions, and in the homes of his many friends. He was a lifelong supporter of Smyrna youth sports. For decades Rusty was active in fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Rusty is survived by his daughters, Melanie McCollum (Josh) of Smyrna, TN; and Katy Griffin of Shelbyville, TN; grandchildren, Cora and Jude McCollum and Blaze Griffin; sister, Kathy Holliday (Dave) of Frederick County, VA; and many nieces and nephews in Virginia.

All services will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

So very sorry for your loss. I thought a lot of Rusty. Bought many furniture items from him. He will be missed....shorts and all.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ve known Rusty for a long time RIP MY FRIEND! FLY HIGH IN HEAVEN WITH THE ANGELS!

You were always the soccer team’s favorite dad and such a joy to be around! You will be very missed.

We bought our first furniture from Rusty's dad in 1964 when the store was located in the building on Hazelwood Drive that was previously the theater. "Griff" and Fran were always so friendly and helpful, and Rusty continued that same type of service to customers through the years. Smyrna has lost another son and bright smile, much too soon. Dear Kathy and Family: Emily and I are so sorry about the unexpected passing of your brother, Rusty. Please know we are thinking of you and have you in our thoughts and prayers. I did not know your brother, but I surely know his sister and can just imagine how proud he was of you and Dave and your many accomplishments. You and Dave represent all the qualities that are so admired: kindness, generosity, humility, a love of life, and incredible people skills. Godspeed Rusty....

Rusty was my bus driver when I was a little boy, he was always very kind to me and my brothers. We were extremely fond of him, he would let us have paper wad fights on the bus as long as we cleaned up after ourselves. My parents bought a lot of furniture from Regal back in the day, Rusty would always recognize us from when we were little. So very sad to hear of his passing but he is standing in glory now.

Rusty was one in a million...no, a trillion. His laughter and personality brought happiness to all who knew and loved him. I feel privileged that his sister, Kathy, shared her brother with me. I enjoyed many belly laughs and great conversations. Rest in peace, Rusty. You will be so missed, and I know you will make the brightest star yet in the universe.

Remember the furniture store. Purchased items for my first house. Rusty was always a very nice guy.

So sorry to hear of Rusty's passing. I remember the Christmas updates he would send out at Christmas time. I have bought several items at Regal back in the day when he and his parents ran the store. My condolences to his family. Prayers.
