Richard Melvin Jarrell, Sr., 86, of Cross Junction, Virginia passed away Monday, December 3, 2018, at Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Jarrell was born in 1932 in Church Hill, Maryland, the son of the late Herbert and Martha Jarrell. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a Military Police Officer at Fort Lee, Petersburg, Virginia, and retired from Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Mr. Jarrell was a member of the Local 689 Transit Union. He enjoyed gardening, good food, and a fine cigar. Mr. Jarrell adored his four legged fur babies, Shiloh and the late Bonnie and DJ.
He married Patricia E. Kern on August 13, 1983 in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife are sons, Richard M. Jarrell, Jr. and wife, Erika and Earnest T. Jarrell; stepdaughter Jacquelyn P. Kern-Biggs and husband, Robert; stepson, Christopher S. Kern, Sr. and wife, Stephanie; granddaughter, Brandi L. Jarrell; step-grandchildren, Laura A. Kern and husband, Drew, Christopher S. Kern, Jr. and wife, Katherine, Savanna A.M. Kern, and Zachary J. Biggs; two step-great grandchildren; sisters, Daisey Dill, Doris Coleman and husband, Marion, Betty Jean Allen and husband, John, and Phyllis Jarrell; and brother, Clifton Jarrell.
Mr. Jarrell was preceded in death by brothers, Franklin, Lee, Bill, and Earl Jarrell.
A visitation will be from 10 am to 11 am on Saturday, December 8th, at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel with a funeral service at 11 am with Pastor Mike Mayton officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Winchester, Virginia.
