Richard Clarke Mason VIII of Middletown, VA was received home on May 16, 2022 at the age of 62 after a courageous battle with Cancer, surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest. Just like he dealt all experiences in life, Rick managed his illness with strength and grace and wanted to spend as much time with loved ones as possible.

Rick was born in Baltimore, MD on December 15, 1959 to Richard Clarke Mason VII and Elizabeth Eileen Mason and relocated to Winchester as a teenager. Rick played Varsity football, ran track, wrestled and played baseball for James Wood High School. Rick loved his family, building houses, and football; which he played from the age of 5 and through his time at Shepherd College. After college, Rick continued in his father’s footsteps in the construction industry, beginning and ending his career with the 84 Lumber Company.

One of Rick’s biggest life accomplishments and joys was being a father, and then a grandfather and he gave unconditional love. He had a servant’s heart for anyone that needed help and wasn’t afraid to offer it to them without hesitation. If there was a place on Earth close to heaven for Rick, it was boating on the Chesapeake Bay on a beautiful sunny day. We wish you smooth sailing, Captain Rick.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his daughter Brandi and husband Mike Cowden along with his grandchildren Madison, Payton and Mason Cowden of Stephen’s City, VA, his sisters Deborah D’Domenicus and Pamela Bennett (Cliff), nephews PJ D’Domenicus (Amy) and Anthony D’Domenicus and many, many friends whom he saw as family.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, May 19, 2022, from 6:00 pm-8:00pm, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

A celebration of Richard’s life and the love will be held on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 11:00 am at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

Rick was a great person - he came into my business Ebert Reproduction for his printing . We saw him at least once a week. We so enjoyed talking with him and enjoying his company as he waited on his printing. -He was always very busy with his construction; so sorry for your great loss, a very nice man - he will be missed.

I am very sorry to hear of Rickie’s passing. Ironically, I recently was thinking of Rickie. I knew him in high school. He was friends with my brother Bill (then known as Buddy). Rickie often hung out at my parents’ house where I got to know him. To me he was funny, kind, caring guy. I am sorry we lost touch but it sounds like he had a full life. My condolenses to his family.

Rick had been our salesman for 30+ years. If he changed companies, then we went with him. We truly admire Rick's determination to continue to work right up to the end. He was like family to us and he will be sadly missed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Brandi and family.

I remember Rick when he first moved here and attended Aylor then JW. We were in Choral and Concert Choir together. I remember his first day at Aylor he came walking in with this big ski jacket on and from that day I nick named him Jean-Claude Killy after the French alpine ski racer! His smile and laugher would light up a room. A big heart who loved life. Cherish your photographs and memories because this will carry you through the healing process. My thought and prayers are with all of you.

You will be greatly missed by all who knew you in this journey on earth. I am sure You are sailing in the heavens. Farewell my friend.

I’m so very sorry to hear about Ricky. He was a great guy. So devoted to Brandi and his grandkids. I looked forward each year to see his Halloween costumes he would wear for the kids. Rest In Peace friend. I know you have found peace and freedom from pain.

I remember enjoying a Nascar race at Pocono with Rick. Such and outstanding guy.

Rick has been and will be greatly missed. We are thankful to have known Rick and will always be indebted to his kindness and generosity. Our condolences and prayers to Brandy and the grandchildren. We spent many times camping and riding four wheelers with Rick also going to WVU games and NASCAR races. Rick will be missed by all! We know Rick is with our savior Jesus and we look forward to being together again. Our family has beyond blessed by knowing Rick and we are forever grateful.

So very sorry for the loss of your father and brother Ricky. We lived across the street from them on Crest Circles in Winchester for many years. My mom and dad were good friends with Dick and Ilene Mason. Prayers for comfort for all of you.
