Reverend Allen G. Dec, 80, of Middletown, VA, passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at UVA Hospital in Charlottesville, VA.
Allen was born in Passaic, NJ, to Walter Dec and Mildred Kasica and grew up in Clifton, NJ. A deeply spiritual and creative man, Allen received his master’s degree in theology for Salesians Don Bosco in NY and entered the Capuchin Franciscan Order at the age of 31. He served as an assistant pastor in Hendersonville, NC. Allen later joined the American Catholic Church, Inc., where he continued his ministry with devotion and compassion.
A self-taught organist and harpist, Allen shared his love of music throughout his life. He published three books of harp music and two books of poetry, “Seasons” and “Transitions.” He was involved with the Music for Healing & Transition Program since 1995, serving as a board member, teacher, mentor, and certified music practitioner. He also played harp for patients at Winchester Hospital and Blue Ridge Hospice.
Allen worked as a graphic artist for Tri-Chem and later for the Northern Virginia Daily newspaper, retiring in 2010. He was an accomplished painter, enjoyed teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), and led Tai Chi classes for seniors at six different venues in his community. He was also a former member of the Washington D.C. Area Folk Harp Society.
Allen loved helping others and spending time with his family, whom he cherished deeply. He is survived by his brother, Raymond Dec, and sister-in-law, Linda, of New Jersey, as well as his niece and nephew, Alicia and Joshua. He also leaves behind many cousins and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Walter “Barry” B. Dec.
Rev Allen G Dec Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, May 31,2025 at 11AM at Unitarian Universal Church.
