Thirteen or fourteen years ago a Pain Nurse from Winchester Virginia called and wanted to come see my pain service. The physicians we each worked with were former classmates and it was only natural that we share ideas. She arrived bright and cheerful at 0655 after driving 3 hours from her home, and a wonderful friendship began. We mentored each other through the years.(Though she always gave me the mentor role, she was the dynamite that sparked me). I dreamt Monday night that she came over to UVa to ask me for advice about arraigning ASPMN. In my dream she was typical Regina - the party planner and detail person! She wanted everything to be just right.I encouraged her to join ASPMN and before I knew it she was helping to start a chapter (NOVA).I nominated her for the ASPMN BOARD. Knowing she was an English major in college, I begged her to be run for secretary. And what a great job she did! She took it all so seriously and always did her best. But she has a not so serious side! She was funny and outgoing. Last October we shopped in DC and bought the same shirt to wear to dinner that night. We shared stories and laughed. She never met a stranger. I have a great memory of Bill & Regina in front of the Mary Tyler Moore statue in Minnesota. I remember thinking -That girl did just make it after all! I will miss you my dear friend.Nancy Eksterowicz RN BC, MSNUniversity of Virginia Health SystemASPMN

I am so going to miss Regina's smile and sense of humor. She was a joy to work with on the ASPMN board. She had a tireless dedication to improving the lives of persons with pain. When we were at the University of Virginia to donate the ASPMN archives, she took me on a tour with Bill and Aaron. She was so proud of the accomplishments Aaron had achieved. The first time that I met Regina was at the pool at the Star Pass Resort at ASPMN's first meeting there. She was a delight to spend an afternoon with. I was delighted when she joined the ASPMN board as secretary. She dedicated herself to this job and worked so hard to make sure that she was able to get the minutes correct. She also brought a sense of fun and a great sense of humor to our meetings and the downtimes of the board. I had a great deal of fun with her when we roomed together for our media training. I could not ask for a better roommate. Her stories about her life in Wincester and her home on Okracoke were fun to listen to. She was so proud of her family. She spoke so highly of Bill and she couldn't be more proud of Aaron. Her life was truely a blessing and she is missed by allAnn Schreier

Regina was an inspiration to me as she rounded on her pain patients in the hospital. Each one knew they were the 'only' patient she had while she was in the room. I admired her committment to making the world as pain free as possible. I'm so happy I had the opportunity to know her and work with her. There is a special place in heaven for her. I know Bill and Aaron are heart broken. I'm praying your sweet memories will give you strength.Romans 15:13May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. I've been trying to think of the perfect thing to write for the past couple of days, but have just decided there is nothing more perfect than the words that come naturally. I am stunned and saddened with Regina's passing, and my only real consolations seem to be - I know she is in heaven and teaching pain management to all those who will listen and I was able to be a part of her life for all of her ASPMN years. Regina and I were among the "short" people at ASPMN, which was an automatic bonding experience. She and I could always see "eye to eye", which not everyone could. She was a spark of energy that lit up our organization with humor, enthusiasm and love. She had an infectious personality and was always willing to share her love of life with everyone.I vividly remember when I called her and asked her to consider seeking a national position with ASPMN. She was so surprised that I would think she was capable - my goodness, she was more than capable in every way. We were so fortunate to have her serve in her position over the past few years.Tucson, last September was a seemingly perfect time for Regina and Bill. The hiking in the mountains around the hotel provided an amazing experience and they both relished the beauty that was to be found.Regina was a true and gentle friend. Although it's not a well known fact, she was quite a dancer! As you may or may not know, pain management is a very taxing specialty and we spend many hours concerned about the patients, the healthcare system, the physicians we work with and our families who may not receive as much attention as they deserve. We are often stretched to the limits, but we give willingly and lovingly since we have come to love the field in which we work. Therefore, we routinely have a party at the end of our ASPMN conference each year - just to let off steam, to rest our brains after 4 days of intensive training and to enjoy our friends and colleagues, since we may not see them for another year. Regina was one of the few of us that danced without worrying about who would tease us, who wore crazy, silly hats bought specifically for the occasion and encouraged others to participate,She will be sorely missed by those of us who were fortunate enough to call her friend. Bill and Aaron, thank you for sharing her with us. Please know we never took it for granted.Marsha Stanton, PhD, RN
