Raymond Joseph Murphy, age 84, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2017 at Orchard Woods Health Center, Winchester.
Raymond was born in 1932 in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of the late Peter and Josephine M. Murphy. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy Class of 1949. He continued his education at the University of Rhode Island where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. Raymond worked as a civil engineer for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, retiring in 1990. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War. Raymond was a proud American and believed strongly in both civil service and responsible citizenship. He was of the Roman Catholic faith and for so many years was involved with Good Shepherd Catholic Church in the Mount Vernon section of Alexandria.
After retiring from government service, he owned and operated Plantation Flower Shoppe with his wife. The couple spent most of their retirement in Mason Neck, Virginia. Raymond was a consummate gentleman and an inspiration to his children, encouraging them to excel in their education and all of their life pursuits. He loved history, literature and numerous creative pursuits. He was an avid fan and student of baseball. He was especially masterful in his role as “Poppy” to nine beloved grandchildren.
Raymond married Isabella MacGregor on August 30, 1956 in Inverness, Scotland.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 61 years are three daughters, June Kohler (Mark) of Woodbridge, Virginia, Monica Bradley (Scott) of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Barbara LaChance (Mike) of Edina, Minnesota; one son, Raymond Murphy Jr. (Amy) of Richmond, Virginia; nine grandchildren — Brian, Michael, Monica, Eric, Erin, Patrick, Colin, Quinn and Clare; one sister, Mary O’Connell (Ray) of Warwick, Rhode Island ;and one brother, Peter Murphy (Dot) of Concord, New Hampshire as well as many extended family members and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his brother John Murphy.
The family will receive friends at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel on Wednesday morning, May 31, 2017, from 9:00 until 10:00 AM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Father Eric Shafer officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Quantico National Cemetery.
