Ray Elmer Spitzer, Sr., 86, of Winchester, VA left this earth on January 21, 2016 in Winchester, VA.
Born March 27, 1929, Ray was the son of the late Homer and Lillie Spitzer. On July 30, 1951, he was married to the late Elizabeth Hodgson Spitzer in Frederick, MD.
Ray was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His entire life was spent taking care of others and adoring his sweet Elizabeth. He enjoyed many years of travel and camping with his family. The last two years of his life were lit up by his great-granddaughters, Madelyn Rae and Opal Lea.
Ray retired from Henkle Harris Furniture Company and Shenandoah University. He was a skilled woodworker, and had an absolute knack for building or fixing whatever was required.
Ray is survived by two sons, Ray E. Spitzer, Jr. and R. Steven Spitzer, daughter in law, Jalisa Reever, three grandsons and their wives, Jeremy and Jennifer Spitzer, Jason and Dawn Spitzer, and Joseph and Kate Tusing, his grand dog and best buddy, Ben, and two great granddaughters, Madelyn Rae and Opal Lea Spitzer. He is also survived by one sister, Janet Harding and one brother, Clifford Spitzer.
Ray is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Hodgson Spitzer, his parents, three sisters, Claire DeLauder, Alice Wynkoop and Radie Dunn, and two brothers, Alfred Spitzer and Clarence Stine.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 27, 2016, 10:30 AM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Reverend Roy Riley officiating. The family will receive visitors at the Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel on Tuesday, January 26, 2016, 6-8 pm. Burial will follow the funeral service at the Timber Ridge Christian Church, Highview, WV.
Ray took great delight in the time he spent with his grand dog and best buddy, Ben. The family asks that in lieu of flowers please honor Ray with a memorial contribution of Briggs Animal Adoption Center, PO Box 1023, Charlestown, WV 25414-1023.
While Ray will be missed terribly by his family and friends, we can all rest assured knowing Ray is fulfilling his dream of strolling over heaven with the love of his life, Elizabeth.
