Deloris and Steve Odom left a message on January 26, 2024:
Dianna, Mark, and children, Steve and I were so sad to hear that Ray had passed away. We have always considered Ray and Betty our very best friends. Betty and I went to nursing school together at the University of Tennessee, and she was my maid of honor at our wedding. We were in your parents wedding in Woodbury, Tennessee. We go back more than 50 years with Betty and Ray. Our children loved Ray. He always had some entertainment for our son, Stephen, and our son still remembers the funny things your Dad did. When I was in Germany with my husband in the Army Medical Corp., your parents spent a week with us traveling thru Germany and Austria. We can remember having breakfast with Betty and Ray in Garmisch, Germany looking up at the Zugspitze Mountain (tallest mountain peak in Germany) while having a wonderful breakfast. We will always remember Betty and Ray, and we have wonderful memories of them. Will will remember you both in our prayers. Dianna, I have a gift for you. Please call Dr. Steve's office at 615-893-1615 to let me know how to send the gift to you. With love, Steve and Deloris Odom

We are so very sorry, for the loving family of Ray Hoover, that he has passed away for now - until you meet again. Ray was a kind and friendly man to everyone, a loving husband to Betty and an excellent and supportive father. We met when our daughters attended Sherando together and he was always there for Diana , as her biggest fan and supporter. We admired his great parenting skills and his positive, friendly attitude. Our sympathy to his family and loving friends. Bless you, Pam and Mitch Orndorff
Peace of mind is a call away. We're here when you need us most.

Dear Dianna and Family, there are so many wonderful things to be said about your Dad. He and your Mother, we're true Christians. Faithful and true to their family, friends and church. Although our loss is different from yours,it's still a great loss. We loved him dearly and respected him greatly. But we both believe he is at peace and enjoying being reunited with Betty , his family and friends and Granddog, Chance. God speed our dear friend until we meet again. Much Love, Carroll and Charlene

I attended elementary school at Readyville TN and high School in Woodbury TN with Ray. We were neighbors and lived less than a mile apart. We were friends but not that close due to ages and different interests. Ray graduated high school a year before me and was attending MTSU and was taking flight training and working as a flight instructor at the Murfreesboro airport which was owned and operated by MTSU. When I graduated a year later, I was only seventeen which meant I was 5 months from legal working age and couldn’t find a job. Ray called one day and told me the airport in Murfreesboro needed someone to work the flight line. I explained to Ray that I didn’t have transportation and wouldn’t be able to make the daily commute which was twenty miles each way. He said that is OK you can ride with me. My working hours were from sunup to sundown which meant a long day. Ray would come by my house about 45 minutes before sunup so that I could get to the airport on time. Keep in mind that he didn’t have to get there that early on any day. He always had one or two classes in the morning and sometimes one in the afternoon. In the afternoon after class at MTSU he would come to the airport to conduct classes for his flight students. When these classes were over, he could have gone home but he would wait for me, as much as 2 hours, to get off. He did this everyday but Sunday for about 3 months until I found a job in Woodbury where I could stay with my sister and walk to work each day. We had a lot of fun and great conversations on the commute as Ray was never in a bad mood. He never charged one penny and wouldn’t accept one. I am 78 years old and have met a lot of kind and unselfish people in my life, but I know that Ray Hoover was the most unselfish person that I have ever met. When I think of Ray, I always think of the bible passage, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Rest in Peace Dear Friend.

Diana; Your dad was one of the first members at Southside who welcomed my wife and I to the church almost 20 years ago, and every Sunday we talked about life in general and the challenges we faced. When I suffered a major brain injury in a near fatal fall two years ago this spring, Ray checked on my recovery during the five months I spent in ICU and Rehab at Winchester Medical Center. I know that he got his wish on December 18th. He wanted to pass from this life into Eternity during his sleep. From what I hear, God granted him his wish and he now waits in Paradise with your mother for all of us. God bless you and your family. He loved each of us dearly and will be sorely missed by all of us who loved him dearly.. In Christian love, Ross and Judy Simpson,

My friendship with Ray and his family began many years ago at Southside Church of Christ in Winchester, Virginia. I quickly saw that he was an extraordinary man. He was a loving husband and father and a true patriot. He embodied the Fruit of the Spirit as set forth in the Holy Scriptures - love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness and faithfulness. His wonderful sense of humor put everyone at ease, and he was a friend to all. He had an amazing recollection of history and, of course, aviation was a big part of his life. I feel privileged to have known Ray, and his kindness to me will live on in my memory. I extend my heartfelt condolences and love to Dianna, Mark, Mason, Caleb and Val.

Tracy Riffle left a message on December 20, 2023:
Found this poem which makes me think of Ray and his impressive dash. The Dash Poem (By Linda Ellis) I read of a man who stood to speak At the funeral of a friend He referred to the dates on the tombstone From the beginning...to the end He noted that first came the date of birth And spoke the following date with tears, But he said what mattered most of all Was the dash between those years For that dash represents all the time That they spent alive on earth. And now only those who loved them Know what that little line is worth For it matters not, how much we own, The cars...the house...the cash. What matters is how we live and love And how we spend our dash. So, think about this long and hard. Are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time is left That can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough To consider what's true and real And always try to understand The way other people feel. And be less quick to anger And show appreciation more And love the people in our lives Like we've never loved before. If we treat each other with respect And more often wear a smile, Remembering this special dash Might only last a little while So, when your eulogy is being read With your life's actions to rehash... Would you be proud of the things they say About how you spent YOUR dash?
