Dr. Randolph “Ronnie” Mott Jackson, Jr., 90, of Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury in Winchester, Va., died Saturday, Aug. 13 at Blue Ridge Hospice. He died of pulmonary fibrosis.
Dr. Jackson was born June 25, 1921, in Leesburg, Va., to Randolph Mott Jackson, Sr., and Daisy Lee Bell. Dr. Jackson married Peggy Malone Allensworth on Aug. 14, 1964, in Petersburg, Va.
Dr. Jackson graduated from Leesburg High School in 1938. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy in 1943 and his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1946, both from the Medical College of Virginia. He served his internship at the Medical College of Virginia and his residency at McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond.
Dr. Jackson began his career in 1947 as physician director of City Home Hospital in Richmond. He later became the medical director of Pine Camp Hospital and City Chest Clinic in 1949. He was an instructor of anesthesia at the Medical College of Virginia from 1958 to 1959.
He went into private practice in anesthesia in Petersburg, Va., in 1959. He was also a consultant in anesthesia for Kenner Army Hospital in Fort Lee, Va., and at Central State Hospital and The Federal Reformatory, both in Petersburg.
In 1972, Dr. Jackson joined the staff of Winchester Memorial Hospital. From 1985 to 1988, he served as a member of the board of directors of both the Winchester Medical Center and Winchester Regional Health Systems.
In 1983, he founded the Winchester Surgi-Center and served as its first medical director until 1988.
Dr. Jackson retired from practicing medicine in 1989. In 1992 he was asked to serve as the Vice President of Medical Affairs at the Winchester Medical Center and held that position until 1995.
Dr. Jackson was a member of the Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists from 1956 until his death. He served as the Society’s president in 1967 and again in 1968. He received the Society’s Distinguished Service Award in 1979.
He was a member of the American Society of Anesthesiology and attended its House of Delegates meetings from 1967 to 1971, representing Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. He also served as the Society’s secretary from 1983 to 1987.
Dr. Jackson was a delegate to the Eighth World Congress of Anesthesia in Manila, Philippines in 1984.
He was a member of the American Medical Association and the Medical Society of Virginia from 1948 until his death. He was a charter member of the Society of Ambulatory-Based Anesthesia and served on its board of directors from 1985 until his death. He was also a member of the Federated Ambulatory Surgical Association and served on its board of directors from 1986 to 1988.
Dr. Jackson was a life-long student and enjoyed many hobbies, including photography, fishing, boating, gardening, furniture making, music, teaching, and volunteering. After his retirement, he enjoyed watercolor painting and woodcarving. He was an avid reader, a great storyteller, and always ready with a good joke.
He was a member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church and served on many committees at Westminster Canterbury.
In addition to his wife Peggy, Dr. Jackson is survived by his children: Carole Sue Mayfield (husband Norm) of Annapolis, Md., James Robert Jackson (wife Angie) of Winchester, William Allen Jackson (wife Linda) of Winchester, Melanie Jackson Feltner (husband Jeff) of Winchester, and Amy Jackson Newell (husband Paul) of Doswell, Va. Grandchildren include Katie Mayfield (husband James Hamilton), Joshua Feltner (wife Stephanie), Jessica Jackson, Michael Mayfield (wife Nicole), Will Feltner, Courtney Jackson, and Erin Jackson. Great-grandchildren include Ashton Walk, Cayden Collins, and Teagan Feltner.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Clementine Ballou; his sister, Amy Lee Holden; and his daughter, Judy Lee Jackson.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 27, 2 p.m., at the Westminster-Canterbury Chapel with a reception to follow. Chaplain Elizabeth Lewis and the Reverend Anthony Layman will officiate. Arrangements are being handled by Omps Funeral Home.
