Died peacefully in Winchester, Virginia on January 21, 2025, at the age of 95. He was the beloved husband of Nancy (Dubey) for 68 years; the proud father of Donna Marie Thome, David Michael Thome, Michael Pitt Thome and Carolyn Patricia Thome; the loving father-in law of Charley Boehlert, Tess (Teresa Wingo) Thome, and Paul Rhymer; and was “G-Daddy” to his delightful eight redheaded and blond grandchildren: Isaak Boehlert, Julian Boehlert, Katie Thome, Anna Thome, Grace Thome, Ian Thome, Jack Thome, and Sam Thome.
He was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Parish in Rockville Maryland for over 58 years, where his four children attended elementary school.
He was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Xavier University and the Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program. He served as a LTJG in the Navy on a U.S. destroyer for three years during the Korean War. After the Navy his entire career was spent in the Aerospace Industry, first as an Aerodynamic Research Engineer at United Aircraft in East Harford Connecticut, followed by General Electric Company in Cincinnati Ohio, Space Systems Engineer General Electric Company Valley Forge Pennsylvania, a Program Director at NASA Headquarters in Washington D.C. and a consultant for a Federal agency and numerous companies in the Washington D.C. area.
He loved to travel and experience the culture of foreign countries. During his lifetime he had the opportunity to visit over thirty-seven counties either for business or pleasure, the latter occurring on numerous travels with his loving wife Nancy.
Born and raised in Louisville Kentucky he always considered himself a Kentuckian, delighting in returning for grade school and high school reunions, visiting with childhood friends. During his retirement he became very interested in researching family history in Kentucky and colonial Maryland. For the benefit of his children and grandchildren, this resulted in privately published histories of his father Andrew G. Thome: “A Foot Soldier’s View of World War I” and his mother: Mary Elizabeth Pitt’s life and ancestors; “My Family’s Catholic Heritage”; He also published a book on the life and ministry of his uncle Msgr. Felix Newton Pitt: “Journey of a County Soul”. And he also wrote the story about ‘the love of his life’ Nancy Dubey (Thome)-her life, family and Catholic heritage. He was creative, talented, and thoughtful and enjoyed working on many home improvement and yard projects with Nancy at their home of 57 years in the Glen Park neighborhood of Rockville Maryland. He also always enjoyed a bowl of chocolate ice cream. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
Ever the supporter of Catholic Education, donations in Pitt Thome’s memory can be made to St. Mary Catholic School, 600 Viers Mill Road, Rockville, Maryland, 20852.
A Funeral Service will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rockville, MD at a future date to be announced.
