Philip “Phil” W. O’Brien, Jr., 72 of Cross Junction, VA, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at Winchester Medical Center.

Phil was born in 1951 in Chincoteague, VA, the son of the late Philip and Louise O’Brien. Phil served our country for 21 years in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Sergeant Major. After retiring from the military, Phil went on to earn his master’s degree in education, starting a second career in teaching. Phil enjoyed fishing and bowling and was in a league at Northside Lanes.

He is survived by his wife, Mary “Julie” Julia O’Brien, whom he married on December 10, 1991; son, Corey O’Brien (Annie); daughter, Amy Boswell (Scott); grandchildren, Jonathan O’Brien, Kevin O’Brien, Marissa O’Brien, Mercy O’Brien, Ashley O’Brien and Garett Boswell; 1 great-grandchild; sister, Maureen Falkenberry (Jon), brother, Michael O’Brien (Barbara) and many nieces and nephews.

Phil is preceded in death by his parents, son, John O’Brien and sister, Patricia “Patty” Brannon.

A funeral service with military honors will be held for Phil on Friday, October 27, 2023 at 3pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
