Stephens City resident Philip M. Conley passed away on May 24, 2019. He was born October 10, 1930 in Presque Isle, Maine to Charles and Anna Mae Nesbitt Conley and lived much of his life in northern Maine before relocating to Virginia in 2008.
Mr. Conley was an Air Force veteran, serving four years, two of which were in overseas destinations. He was accorded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged in 1955.
Upon return to civilian life, he embarked on a 31-year career with New England Telephone Co. and its successor, NYNEX Corp., that culminated in his 1986 retirement. Never one to sit idly-by, Mr. Conley accepted employment with North Maine Woods, a non-profit organization that manages public use of private forest lands in northwestern Maine; working through 2000.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janice Dodge Conley; daughters, Karen Walker (Dan) of Winchester and Kathy Stewart (Chip) of Snellville, Ga.; grandchildren, Megan Tuggle (Andrew), Eric Walker (Samantha), Patrick Stewart, and Brian Stewart (Brittany); great- grandson, Colton Stewart; and sister, Kay Adams (Harold) of Washburn, Maine.
He was preceded in death by siblings, Hazel Staples, Helen Wisneski, Dorothy Edens, Hilma Nickerson and brothers, Gilford, Linwood, Donald, Delbert, Milford and Elwood Conley.
He was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church in Stephens City where a private celebration-of-life service was held for family on May 26.
