Philip Dale Shutters Farley, 26, died in Benton, Kentucky.

Mr. Farley was born in 1989, in Winchester, Virginia, the son of Philip C.G. and Dorothy Farley of Winchester. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech University receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering. Philip was a Mining Engineer with LaFarge Aggregates – Three Rivers Quarry in Smithland, Kentucky.

Surviving with his parents is his sister, Heather C.S. Farley of Winchester; brother, Nathan Shutters Farley and wife, Lauren, of Crofton, Maryland; nephew, Lincoln Farley; niece, Addison Farley; grandfather, Paul Shutters and many loving family members and friends.

His grandparents, Coleen Shutters, Emmerson Dale Farley and Mabel Farley, preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, January 25, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Jonathan Boynton officiating. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends following the service in Eisenberg Hall at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Food Bank, P.O. Box 937, Verona, Virginia, 24482-0937.

So sorry to hear about Philip. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dottie and Phil, so sorry o hear of your loss. Mary and I were talking and she said she remembers when she and Nathan were in school that she got to know Philip as well. He touched a lot of lives and will live on in many memories. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Phil and Dottie, we are so saddened to hear of Philip's passing. We are truly thinking of you, Heather and Nathan during this difficult time . Know the grieving will be there but you are in our thoughts and prayers.

My husband and I attended James Wood High School with Phil. I had several classes with him and Colby played with him on the soccer team. We both have such positive memories associated with Phil and his always-clever sense of humor and genuine good nature. He was consistently funny and very smart and will surely be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

I wanted to share my best memory of Phillip. At last year's scholarship banquet Phillip suddenly showed up in the chair next to me. I found it humorous, as I am 64 years old, and he wanted to get away from the "drama" at the table next to me which was full of students and chose to sit at my table with the rest of us older folks. He had a very hardy amount of food on his plate and I ask why he had so much. Besides being hungry he was unsure if he could go back to the buffet for more. Honestly I am still unsure how he managed to get that much food on one plate. And he ate it all. We talked throughout the banquet and laughed or maybe I should say made fun of many things. I enjoyed his dry sense of humor as we spoke on occasion during his time in the Department and on trips to SME. I have sons and cannot imagine your pain or sense of loss. My thoughts are with you.

My heart broke when I received this news. Philip and I worked together at Polydeck. We loved to aggravate each other. He was such a great guy and I hated to see him leave the company even though I knew it was to return to school. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Philip will be deeply missed!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I was friends with Phil at Virginia Tech. I have a lot of good memories of me and him doing crazy things, but he was always a good guy at heart. My heart aches at the thought of never talking to him again, but I know he's in a better place now.

I worked with Phillip every day and considered him my friend. I pray God's hands upon your hearts. I am sure Philip is in his loving arms.

Philip was a co-op at Polydeck Screen and I worked with him. He was a great kid. I loved his sense if humor and the way that everything seemed easy to him. I remember his darling smile and the way he touched all of us at work. He was the first student and we cared about him. He was all tough guy on the outside; but he knew the mama in me saw him. I remember getting after him about random mom stuff. Warm clothes, eating, you know, the basics. He followed his own beat. You are missed and sadly mourned. Dottie, Phil, and Heather, I cannot imagine the depth of your grief. What a handsome man Philip became. I remember him most as the beautiful life you held, Dottie, when you and Phil attended the first set of childbirth classes I taught so many years ago. I also remember him as a golden child throughout the elementary school years. I lost track of Philip after that but am happy to see that he, like my oldest daughter Emily, was a Hokie!
