Peter William Schmitt, 60, of White Post, Virginia, died Monday, February 2, 2015, at his home.

Dr. Schmitt was born in 1954, in Guelph, Canada, the son of Anni Schmitt and the late Josef Schmitt. He was a graduate of Lakeland Regional High School in Wanaque, New Jersey, Class of 1972 as well as the University of Maryland receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree and Araneta University in the Philippines, where he received a DVM. He was a Veterinarian and owner of Linden Heights Animal Hospital with his brother, retiring in2011. He was a past President of the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association..

Surviving with his mother of Winchester, Virginia, are three sons, Sam Schmitt, DVM of New Bern, North Carolina, Andrew Schmitt and wife, Alyce and Paul Schmitt all of Winchester; sister, Otti Schmitt of Santa Clara, Utah and brother, Joseph Schmitt, DVM and wife, Andrea, of Winchester.

All services with Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Shelter of the donor’s choice.

Words can't express our sadness at the loss of Peter Schmitt who was not only our favorite vet ever but also a very dear friend. He will be sorely missed and remembered every time we hug our dogs. Our condolences go out to his entire family.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Peter Schmitt's passing. He was a great vet to my fur baby Thumper. He was always so kind and honest. I pray his family can find peace and strength to pull them through this great loss. Rest in peace Dr. Peter.

Dear Sam, Andrew and Paul (and Hope), So sorry to learn of your dad's passing. I can remember many valuable and meaningful conversations with him. I learned so much from him about bees, I will always be grateful. One thing I know about your dad is that his faith in Christ, though challenged by much of life, was very genuine to him. The scripture says, "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life." There are not enough words to express the sadness in my heart. Peter was a great friend and "brother" . He is missed and will be missed by many who mourn his passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. May you find peace.

Peter was truly a special person with many talents and gifts that he willing shared with others. He was a good and faithful friend, and has shown me many, many kindnesses through the years. I know that he has touched the lives of many people in this community and will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace for all eternity.

Our deepest sympathy in Peters passing. We thank him and the hospital which he was a part of for the care that has been provided to our pets over the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Peter has a very special place in my heart.

Dr. Peter was my vet for many years and always took very good care of my four legged kids, Tuney, Sparky, Scar, Dylan and Rock. May he enjoy Heaven as much as he did life.

Dr. Peter was a great vet, and he was a great help to our dogs and us especially when c-sections were needed. Thanks to Dr. Peter, we raised a litter of 7 puppies out of our Lucy and Grayson. Dr. Peter will be very much missed, and our deepest sympathies are extended to his family.
