Pauline Marie Owens Welch, 92, of Henrico (formerly of Winchester), died Sunday, Dec. 9, after a lengthy struggle with pancreatic cancer.
Mrs. Welch was born July 22, 1926, in Frederick County, to C.J. Owens and Lucy Hoover Owens. She graduated from Stephens City High School in 1943 and attended clerical business school in Winchester. From the late 1950s to the late 1990s, she worked at Winchester Medical Center, where she handled patient registration and insurance matters.
She married Harlin Edward Welch on June 10, 1950, in Stephenson. They lived for a short time in York, Pa.; Williamsport, Pa.; and Hagerstown, Md.; before returning to the Winchester area. They remained there until relocating to the Richmond area in 1999 to be closer to family. The couple had been married over 51 years when Mr. Welch died in December 2001.
Mrs. Welch was a longtime member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Stephenson. She joined Good Shepherd United Methodist Church after moving to Henrico. She was a caregiver to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren over the decades. Her interests included knitting, sewing, cookbooks, and the latest kitchen gadgets.
She is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Froom, of Henrico; a sister, Ruth Elliott, of Broadway; a granddaughter, Molly Miller, of Glen Allen; a grandson, Gregory Froom, of Cary, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Andrew Miller, Eleanor Miller and Samuel Miller.
Preceding her in death, along with her husband and parents, are a son, Ross Welch; a brother, Lawrence Owens; a sister, Helen Chrisman; a sister, Dorothy Kremer; and a sister, Betty Owens.
Family will receive friends at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at Omps Funeral Home – South Chapel, 1260 Front Royal Pike, Winchester. A graveside service will follow at Shenandoah Memorial Park.
