Pauletta Carolyn Shrout, 78, of Stephens City, Virginia passed peacefully from this life to her eternal home on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at Winchester Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, James “Ray” Shrout, and a granddaughter, Karaline Grace Chapman also of Stephens City, Virginia.
Pauletta was born July 3, 1943 in Pierce, West Virginia, a daughter of Paul Norman King and Gertrude Marie Yankie. She grew up in Parsons, West Virginia and graduated from Parsons High School with the class of 1961. She was a member of the high school marching band as a majorette and played the bells. After graduating high school, she worked as a secretary in Washington, D.C. before marrying James “Ray” Shrout on June 1, 1963.
Left to cherish Pauletta’s memories are her three daughters: Sheila Elaine Chapman and husband Tim of Stephens City, Virginia; Mendy Luray Myers of Gainesville, Virginia and Ginger Deanne Hamlin and husband Bill of Gainesville, Virginia and four surviving grandchildren: Ashton Lee Myers, Jordan Rae Myers, Emily Nicole Hamlin and Olivia Mae Hamlin. Pauletta has been known to them as “Grammy” for 21 years. She is also survived by her sister, Deanna Jean Canfield and brother-in-law, Marvin of Parsons, West Virginia.
Also cherishing memories made with Pauletta are a nephew and a niece and their spouses and children.
Pauletta touched a lot of people throughout her lifetime and was like a sister to some.
Some of Pauletta’s enjoyments were camping and vacationing in the mountains of West Virginia and Virginia with family and friends as well as holding family reunions. Taking train rides and going antiquing were also some favorites.
She enjoyed taking pictures and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, as well as church friends and neighbors.
Various arts and crafts were favorite pastimes, i.e. macrame, decopage, cross-stitch, sewing, cake decorating, assembling wreaths, scrapbooking, making jewelry, rock painting, working jigsaw puzzles, genealogical research, as well as listening to music and reading.
Pauletta loved working in her flower and vegetable gardens and planted various types of flowers, shrubs, vegetables and herbs. She also enjoyed watching the hummingbirds, cardinals and finches as well as butterflies that would visit often.
She attended Spirit and Word Fellowship Church in Stephens City, Virginia.
Pauletta’s request for cremation will be honored and a private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
