Dr. Paul William Grunmeier
Dr. Paul William Grunmeier, 83, of Winchester, VA, died Tuesday, July 5, 2011, in his home.
Dr Grunmeier was born in 1928, in Bethlehem, PA. He was the only child of Paul A. and Agnes Wilhelmina Grunmeier. He achieved his Bachelor’s of Science from Muhlenberg University; his Master’s of Science from Lehigh University; and his PhD in Microbiology from the University of Pennsylvania. In later years, he studied English and Law at Shenandoah University.
Dr. Grunmeier worked on the Polio Vaccine with Dr. Jonas Salk. He helped make the Measles Vaccine available while at Merck, Sharp & Dome. He advanced medical technology and opened the Technicon Plant in Middletown, VA. He was the Operations Manager for Project Hope and the Director of Foundation Giving at Shenandoah University.
His wife, Mary Jackson Braithwaite Grunmeier preceded him in death in June, 2007. Dr. and Mrs. Grunmeier owned and operated Worth Clothing Store in Winchester, VA.
Surviving are four daughters; Mary Grunmeier of Whippany, NJ; Maggie DeFilippis and husband, Jim of Los Angeles, CA; Molly Anthon and husband, Tom of Winchester, VA and Susan Grunmeier of Ashburn, VA. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren, Jacob and Juliana DeFilippis. Dr. Grunmeier was loved by many.
All Services with Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel will be private.
Because of his love for the school of Lifelong Learning at Shenandoah University all memorial contributions may be made in his name to Classroom Renovation Project, Shenandoah University, 1460 University Drive, Winchester, VA 22601.
