Paul Hampton “Hamp” Hylton, Jr., M.D., 83, of Winchester, Virginia passed away Thursday, December 20, 2018, at the Village at Orchard Ridge Skilled Nursing Facility.
Dr. Hylton was born in 1935 in Roanoke, Virginia, the son of the late Paul and Ena Hylton. He graduated from Bridgewater College, earning a B.A. in PreMed in 1956 and his medical degree from University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1960. Dr. Hylton was a veteran of the United States Army, achieving the rank of Captain. He was Chief of Pediatrics at the U.S. Army Hospital in Vicenza, Italy from 1963-1966.
Dr. Hylton practiced pediatric medicine at Pediatric Associates of Winchester for 40+ years.
Dr. Hylton was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and participated in the Chancel Choir and Handbell Choir. He was a member of the Raven Society, Alpha Omega Alpha honorary medical society, Virginia Pediatric Society, Northern Virginia Medical Society, Medical Society of Virginia, and the American Medical Association. Dr. Hylton was past President of the Winchester Medical Center staff from 1985-1986 and served on various committees. He was a preceptor in the Shenandoah University Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant programs. Dr. Hylton served on the Frederick County School Health Committee, the Judges Athletic Association and Gavel Society. He was the team and tournament physician for Handley High School’s wrestling program and was co-founder of the girls sports physical exam program in the Shenandoah Valley.
He married Julia (Judy) Weller on December 26, 1959 in Staunton, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife is a daughter, Julia Hylton Unger (Donnie) of Winchester, Virginia; sons, Paul Robert Hylton (Robin) of Leesburg, Virginia and Jeffrey Scott Hylton (Maria) of Fairfax, Virginia; grandchildren, Kayla, Jon, Justin, Sarah, Elizabeth, Joseph, and Faith; two great grandchildren; and brother, Ronald Irwin Hylton (Jean) of Harrisonburg, Virginia.
A visitation will be from 6:30 pm to 9 pm on Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 3 pm on Friday at First Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Kristin Adkins-Whitesides officiating. Interment will be private.
