Pastor David M. Hartley, 62 of Winchester, VA passed away Thursday, October 21, 2021 at Winchester Medical Center.

David was born in 1959 in Winchester, VA to the late Robert Marshall and Maude Lee Hartley. He was a graduate of James Wood High School, Class of 1977. He was Senior Pastor at Open Door Baptist Church, Clear Brook, VA since 2016. Pastor Dave enjoyed walking in the mountains and was an avid reader. Known as “Pap” to his grandkids, he absolutely loved and adored them. His dog Paisley also had a special place in his heart. His greatest joy was helping to bring others to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Over the last 30 years, Pastor Dave owned and operated Sunrise Builders of Northern Shenandoah Valley, LLC where he created lifelong friends and associates. The workers were more than that; they were family to Pastor Dave and he loved them all.

He married Donna Kay Brannon in 1977 in Winchester, VA.

Pastor Dave is survived by his wife, Donna; daughter, Stephanie Orndorff (Scott) of Gore, VA; grandchildren, Kieran Orndorff (Casey), Hayden Orndorff (fiancé Rileigh), and Laina Orndorff, all of Winchester, VA; sister, Regina Collette of Stephens City, VA; brothers, Timothy Hartley (Charlene) of Clear Brook, VA and Bryan Hartley of Stephens City, VA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Pastor Dave is preceded in death by two brothers, Gary and Clifton Hartley.

A visitation will be Thursday, October 28, 2021 from 5pm to 8pm with a service the following day Friday, October 29, 2021 at 11am, all held at Open Door Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Officiating will be Pastor Dave’s son-in-law, Pastor Scott Orndorff.

In the interest of keeping all of Pastor Dave’s family and friend’s safe, we would strongly encourage you to please wear a face covering for the services.

For those who cannot attend Pastor Dave’s service in person, a livestream will be available through the church’s Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/opendoorbaptistchurch.org, or through his obituary page on the Omps Funeral Home website by clicking on the link for the livestream.

We are so sorry to hear of the loss of Pastor Dave. His family is in our thoughts and prayers. May God keep you all in his care.

I am so sorry to hear about David’s passing. I only knew him a short time while he and Kieran built a roof over my deck, but he was always so cheerful and kind. It was a joy to watch the way they worked together to complete the plans my late husband had for our porch. Although David had many projects in the works, he found the time to complete mine when I couldn’t find a builder to take it on. I pray you all find comfort and strength in your memories and the knowledge of his eternal salvation.

My heart is crushed to hear this news. I pray that God’s peace will encompass the Hartley family and the Open Door family. In a situation like this words can’t suffice, only Jesus can help fill the void. I am a better man for having had the privilege of knowing Pastor Dave, I will miss him dearly.

I sure do miss my friend. Dave has received the best promotion that a true Christian can ever receive. To me he was an advisor, a true friend and a person so close to Jesus that he often only used Jesus' first name. Dave earned a living by the sweat of his brow as anyone who ever shook his hand will attest to. Dave was an inspiration and he was a first class Master Carpenter. We were so sad to hear of Dave's passing, but in the same breath we were so excited, knowing he was rejoicing in heaven with the Lord. Matt & I are so sad and shocked to hear of Pastor Dave's passing. He was the most down to earth person and the best deliverer of Christ's word , by far. October 29, 2017 ; Pastor Dave led me to the lord I got saved at 7:30am just him and I talking in the cafeteria he called me his Halloween baby. He was the type of man that made me want to be a better man. Knowing him was my privilege and has changed my life forever.
